* Four Carroll County men recently returned aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk, Va., following a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf.The men are Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. McElroy, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph L. Kahney and Navy Airman Apprentices George H. Tutor and Aaron S. Bennett.They participated in operations and training exercises as the USS America led its 12-ship battle group. The carrier and its escorts conducted exercises with NATO allies in the Mediterranean and with the Egyptian Air Force in the Red Sea. Once in the Gulf, more training was performed with the armed forces of Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

* Navy Ensigns Brian C. Dozier and Scott D. Kuykendall graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis May 27 and were commissioned to their present rank in the U.S. Navy.At the Naval Academy, they underwent four years of academic, physical and professional training, culminating with a bachelor of science degree. Dozier took his degree in systems engineering, and Kuykendall took his in oceanography.The academy, ranked as one of the top institutions in the country, offers engineering, science and humanities to prepare the midshipmen for a military career.

Airman Ronald R. Ellis, son of Gilbert S. * Marine Lance Cpls. Dale A. LaRue and Mark T. Thurston are in the Mediterranean with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and are in the middle of a six-month deployment.Theyhave been participating in various operations and training exercisesdesigned to challenge the mission readiness of the unit. They recently completed two weeks of intensive training at Camp De Canjuers, France, and a liberty port visit to Haifa, Israel.Most recently, they arrived in Rota, Spain, and will visit other ports in the Mediterranean as the deployment continues.

Marousek Jr. of Sykesville, recently reported for duty aboard the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.The 1989 graduate of Liberty High School joined the Navy in January 1991.* Navy Airman Apprentice George H. Tutor, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. McElroy and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph L. Kahney, all stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeportedin Norfolk, Va., recently completed the NATO maritime exercise NorthStar '91.Tutor is the son of Nancy M. Tutor of Westminster and a1988 graduate of North Carroll High.

Polhamus, son of Larry and Marcia Polhamus of Columbia, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.The 1990 Wilde Lake High School graduate joined the Marine Corps in April 1991.* Airman Steven S. Swenson, son of Air Force Lt. Col. Hilmer W. S. Swenson of Columbia, at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.* Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Duane F. Geisler, son of Frederick and Loretta Geisler of Baltimore, at Coast Guard Recruit Training in Cape May, N.J.The 1987 Lansdowne High School graduate joined the Coast Guard Reserves in May 1991.

Marine 2nd Lt. Khyron S. Allen, son of Stan and Josita Allen of Columbia, has graduated from the Basic School at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, Va.Allen, who was prepared as a newly commissioned officer for assignment to the Fleet Marine Force, joined the Marine Corps in April 1988.LOWER GETS HIS WINGS2nd Lt. Patrick K. Lower, son of Edward and Bonnie Lower of Clarksville, received his wings after completing 13 months of training from the U.S. Army Aviation Flight School, Fort Rucker, Ala.Lower, who is a 1985 graduate of Atholton High School, is qualified to fly Huey and Cobra helicopters.

* Navy Airman Apprentice Dawn M. Bryson, daughter of Robert G. and Colleen R. Kapfer of Westminster, has completed the Aviation Electrician's Mate Course.During the course, conducted at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Millington, Tenn., she received introductoryinstruction required to perform scheduled maintenance on naval aircraft, including electrical and electronic instrument systems. Bryson also received instruction to prepare her for further specialized training on electrical and electronic instrument systems.
