Seaman Jason Michael Butler, who played lacrosse and football for Calvert Hall College, died Monday after plunging from the aircraft carrier USS Independence while the ship was docked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He was 22.He had been stationed on the Independence, based in Yokosuka, Japan, since October 1995.Mr. Butler's father, Dennis Butler, said his son had been having difficulty sleeping on the ship and suffered a panic attack about 5 a.m. Monday after he was refused permission to leave the docked vessel.

Willoughby of Sykesville.He is a 1992 graduate of Liberty High School and joined the Navy in 1992.

Mohney recently graduated fromthe Basic Avionics Aviation Electronics Technician Course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center at the Naval Air Station Memphis, Millington, Tenn.Mohney, the son of Jeannine M. Wroten of Sykesville, is a 1988 Liberty High School graduate. He joined the Navy in September 1990.WAGNER LEARNS AUTOSMarine Pfc. William E. Wagner, the son of Barbara and William Wagner of Mount Airy, recently completed the Automotive Organizational Maintenance Course at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.Wagner, a 1983 South Carroll High School graduate, joined the Marine Corps in January 1991.

Navy Seaman Hubert W. Goins of Mount Airy has returned to San Diego after a six-month overseas deployment aboard the destroyer USS Elliott that included duty in the Persian Gulf.While in the gulf, the ship and its crew helped enforce the international embargo against Iraq by intercepting merchant ships suspected of violating the agreement.A 1992 graduate of Linganore High School, Seaman Goins joined the Navy in February 1993.FireMount Airy: Mount Airy assisted Howard County with a car fire in the eastbound lane of Interstate 70. Units were out for 48 minutes.

Navy Seaman Recruit Garrick H. Hoffman, son of Ronald L. and Rosean M. Hoffman of Sykesville, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.During his eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields.His studies included seamanship, close order drill, naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene.
