* Four Carroll County men recently returned aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk, Va., following a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf.The men are Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. McElroy, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph L. Kahney and Navy Airman Apprentices George H. Tutor and Aaron S. Bennett.They participated in operations and training exercises as the USS America led its 12-ship battle group. The carrier and its escorts conducted exercises with NATO allies in the Mediterranean and with the Egyptian Air Force in the Red Sea. Once in the Gulf, more training was performed with the armed forces of Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Reynolds promotedArmy Reserve Lt. Col. Arthur Reynolds, a Columbia attorney, was recently promoted to his present rank in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps. Colonel Reynolds is assigned to Fort Mead where he is handling personal injury claims against the Army.Petty officer elevatedNavy Petty Officer 2nd Class John Warfield Jr., son of Albert and Cynthia Kupres of Clarksville and Mike and Mary Warfield of Baltimore, was recently elevated to his current rank. A hospital corpsman, Petty Officer Warfield is stationed aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, an aircraft carrier home ported in Norfolk, Va.The 1986 graduate of Lansdowne Senior High School enlisted in the Navy in August 1986.

Navy Officer Gets MedalNavy Petty Officer 1st Class Luis A. Villamonte, a 1975 graduate of John Carroll School recently received the Good Conduct Medal.The medal recognizes the service member's honest and faithful service during a four-year period.To earn it, Petty Officer Villamonte achieved and maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record for the entire period.He is currently assigned with Patrol Squadron-30, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla. He joined the Navy in February 1978.

A Carroll County man was among eight seniors from Western Maryland College who was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army on May 23 in Alumni Hall.Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet Peter A. May will enter the military with the rank of second lieutenant. He has participated in Ranger Challenge, Ranger Platoon and Airborne and will enter the Army as an aviator.The communications major is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert May nTC of Marriottsville.* Marine Pfc. Brett A. Garber recently completed the Basic Metal Worker Course.

Marine Pfcs. Eric S. Cole, son of Elizabeth DeCoursey of Hampstead, and Wesley D. Sanders, son of Glendol R. and Linda L. Sanders of Westminster, recently completed recruit training.During the training cycle at Marine Corps Depot, Parris Island, S.C., recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival and introduced to military daily routine.Cole, a 1989 graduate of Overlea High School in Baltimore, joined the Marine Corps in March 1991.Sanders, a 1990 graduate of Westminster High School, also was promoted to his present rank.

Eisenhower, based in Norfolk, Va., following a six-month deployment.He participated in operations in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and PersianGulf, as well as in the NATO Exercise Teamwork '92 in the Norwegian Sea.Teamwork '92, designed to improve the professionalism and effectiveness of NATO forces while operating in the North Atlantic and coastal waters of Norway, included maritime, air, amphibious and field training exercises.

Yeager, recently returned aboard the destroyer USS Elliott, homeported in San Diego, Calif., following a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf regions.He participated in mine countermeasure andsurface surveillance operations and training exercises. While in thePersian Gulf area, the USS Elliott operated as flagship for the North Arabian Gulf Task Group.Yeager was able to visit several ports, including Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines; Phuket, Thailand; Singapore; Bahrain; Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Saudi Arabia; Muscat, Oman and Hong Kong.

* Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Scott W. Kroft and Navy Lt. j.g. MacGregor L. McClellan recently returned to Port Hueneme, Calif., with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Four following a seven-month deployment to Japan and the Philippines.While in Okinawa, Japan, they assisted in several projects, including the rehabilitation of enlistedliving quarters and a public works building and renovating one of the base's water mains.After being redeployed to the Philippines, they participated in the recovery operations at Subic Bay Naval Base following the eruptionof Mount Pinatubo.
