A 21-year-old Navy petty officer was charged with child abuse and assault yesterday in connection with the death of his 3-year-old son, authorities said. Rodney Lamar Dickerson Jr. died Sunday night, police said. His father, Petty Officer 2nd class Rodney L. Dickerson, is accused of beating the toddler as punishment for running in their Laurel apartment, according to a statement of charges filed with a District Court commissioner yesterday by Anne Arundel County police. Dickerson was taken into custody at 6 a.m. yesterday at his apartment in the 3400 block of Andrew Court, police said.

A Navy petty officer from the Baltimore area who stole the identities of nearly two dozen service members was sentenced yesterday to 47 months in the brig, according to a military spokesman. Curtis L. Phillips was convicted of identity theft and three other charges relating to his enlistment and service during a general court-martial at the Navy Trial Service Office in Norfolk, Va., Navy officials said. Four of the 22 victims, all of whom were stationed with Phillips aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, testified during the proceedings, officials said.

The Navy's espionage case against former NSA cryptologist Daniel King was dealt a blow yesterday when a military appeals court found that the Navy had violated King's constitutional rights and ordered that this case start over from the beginning. King, a decorated Navy petty officer first class, was arrested in October 1999 after Naval officials said he failed a routine lie detector test and confessed to sending a computer disk to the Russian Embassy in Washington. He has been held for 14 months at the military brig at Quantico, Va., and the Navy had been laying out the case against him in a pre-trial hearing.

A 40-year-old Navy cryptography expert, formerly based at the National Security Agency, has been arrested on espionage charges after admitting that he mailed a computer floppy disk containing U.S. secrets to Russian officials.News of the arrest followed reports in Russia and Europe that Moscow had arrested a U.S. diplomat at the embassy there and accused her of spying. U.S. officials declined to say whether there is a connection between the events.In the NSA case, Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel M. King, apparently despondent over a failing marriage and a stalled Navy career, confessed after failing a lie detector test during a routine security clearance review last summer.

Yeager has enlistedDustin L. Yeager, son of David and Kay Yeager of Joppa, enlisted in the delayed enlistment program of the U. S. Air Force.Dustin, a 1989 graduate of Fallston High School, is scheduled to begin basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.According to Sgt. Allen Lipscomb, the Air Force recruiter, Mr. Yeager will earn credits toward an associate degree in applied sciences through the Community College of the Air Force upon completion of basic training and Technical Training School.
