ANNAPOLIS -- This year's graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy share an uncommon distinction.Call them near-veterans. For the first time in a generation, midshipmen at the academy saw their country fight a war.And while the Persian Gulf conflict began and ended in the equivalent of a half-semester, the war served to remind the future Navy and Marine Corps officers of just what will be expected of them."

Navy Midshipman Kathleen M. Schultz, daughter of Warren W. Schultz of Edgewater, was recently selected for admission into the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit at Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.Schultz was sworn in as a Navy midshipmen before beginning a program that will lead to a commission as an ensign in the Navy, or a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, upon graduation from Villanova University.Schultz is a 1990 graduate of Saint Mary's High School, Annapolis.WESTGATE FLIES SOLONavy Ensign Christopher D. * Several countians have completed naval training at their recruit centers.During their eight-week training cycle, the countians studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields.Studies included seamanship, close-order drill, naval history andfirst aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene.Navy Airman Recruit James E. Mohney, son of Jeannie M. Wroten of Sykesville, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego.

Apprentice William K. Doyle, the son of Karen S. Doyle of Annapolis and whose wife, Holly, is the daughter of Jacob and Debra J. Sauter of Annapolis, has completed the Aviation Electrician's Mate Course.During the course, conducted at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Air Station Memphis, Millington, Tenn., Doyle received introductory instruction required to perform scheduled maintenance on navel aircraft, including electrical and electronic instrument systems. Doyle also received instruction to prepare him for further specialized training on electrical and electronic instrument systems.
