* Several countians have completed naval training at their recruit centers.During their eight-week training cycle, the countians studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields.Studies included seamanship, close-order drill, naval history andfirst aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene.Navy Airman Recruit James E. Mohney, son of Jeannie M. Wroten of Sykesville, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego.

Marousek Jr. of Sykesville, recently reported for duty aboard the amphibious command ship USS Blue Ridge, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.The 1989 graduate of Liberty High School joined the Navy in January 1991.* Navy Airman Apprentice George H. Tutor, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. McElroy and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph L. Kahney, all stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeportedin Norfolk, Va., recently completed the NATO maritime exercise NorthStar '91.Tutor is the son of Nancy M. Tutor of Westminster and a1988 graduate of North Carroll High.

South Carroll High School students in Spanish II and Child Development classes will participate in a cross-curricular lesson tomorrow. Spanish students have written bilingual children's stories that they will share with 4-year-old Child Development children. Sarah Hash, a sophomore in the Child Development program and a Spanish student, is creating a lesson for the preschoolers on "Knowing Your World/Community." Hash and Spanish teacher Patricia Keenan created a lesson in which the Spanish students, who wrote the storybooks, will be partnered with a small group of 4-year-olds to teach a Spanish word, then to read the story in Spanish and English.

Wiley Purkey is the newest member of the Sykesville Historic District Commission. His appointment last week brings to six the number of members of the commission.A seventh member, not yet appointed, will join the panel next month, said Councilman Garth Adams, liaison to the commission."Our town is growing and changing," said Mr. Adams. "Every consultant we have talked to has told us that the Historic District is Sykesville. We need more members to help with our activities."The panel will soon be organizing activities to raise money to renovate the Gatehouse, an aging building on Cooper Drive, into a municipal museum.
