The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named Scott Peavler of Glen Burnie, coach of the women's soccer team at Anne Arundel Community College, its Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year.Peavler will receive his award at a luncheon for college coaches Jan. 21 during the association's convention in Philadelphia. He remains one of three finalists for the NSCAA/Adidas Coach of the Year award, which will be presented at a banquet Jan. 22.Four members of Peavler's team were Maryland junior college and regional first-team selections.

Dante Washington, a Columbia native and a member of the U.S. National team attempting to qualify for the 1992 Olympics, was a first-team selection on the All-American soccer squad named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.Washington, an All-Metro selection during his days at Oakland Mills High, had 16 goals and 14 assists during his junior season at Radford (Va.) University. It was actually his least productive season as a collegian, as he had 27 goals and 22 assists as a freshman.

Three Anne Arundel Community College soccer players recently were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America team.Sandi Young (Andover) of Ferndale and Nikki Beall (Meade) of Laurel were named to the first team while Suzanne Price of Severna Park was named to the second team. All three also were named to the NJCAA National All-Tournament team, along with Megan McElhenny of Davidsonville.Young, a fullback and captain of the team, tallied seven goals and four assists for the year.

Three area soccer standouts were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School All-America Teams. Loyola senior defender Michael DeGraffenreidt and Archbishop Curley's Michael Sauers were named to the boys' team, while McDonogh junior midfielder Anna Bialczak made the girls team. DeGraffenreidt, who was named The Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year, led the No. 1 Dons to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship this fall. The four-year starter is set to play at Lousville.

Crystal palace baltimore Team will not play next season, eyes return in 2012 Crystal Palace Baltimore announced Friday that it will not be fielding a team in the North American Soccer League during the 2011 season in order to restructure with an intended relaunch for the 2012 NASL season. The relaunch will include a complete rebranding of the club to coincide with opening a soccer facility in downtown Baltimore. In addition, the club announced that it is ending its four-year relationship with Crystal Palace FC of England's Championship Division.

NASHVILLE -- Dick Schultz, executive director of the NCAA, will make his fourth "state of the association" address this afternoon during the opening business session of the 85th annual NCAA convention. Reform will be the main topic, but a Division I-A football tournament might also be mentioned.The NCAA sponsors 16-team championship tournaments in Division I-AA, II and III football, while the I-A climax continues to revolve around the traditional bowls. Even before 1990's muddled finish on New Year's Day, Schultz was quoted as saying he thought there would a I-A tournament before the year 2000.

Navy senior linebacker Ross Pospisil was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game, which will take place at 3 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. He leads Navy with 91 tackles and is tied for the team lead in tackles for a loss with six. Pospisil is the 22nd Navy player selected to the game and the first since Adam Ballard in 2007. Men's soccer: Maryland sophomore goalie Zac MacMath was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America third team.
