Two local residents are among those who will help the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland reach new fundraising heights this week when they rappel off a building in downtown Baltimore for the foundation's third annual Rappel for Kidney Health event. The fundraiser will take place Saturday, June 9, at the 32-story Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. Barbara Case, of Timonium, is a pediatric nephrology nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital, who said she put the rappelling challenge on her "to do" list last year after watching others at the event.

When the Super Bowl ends Sunday, win or lose, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is likely to exchange texts with one man. When Brady was 12, he met Tom Martinez at a football camp at the College of San Mateo in California and has sought the coach's assessment of his performance after every game in his career. But in December, the conversation turned from the NFL star's skills to Martinez's health, after Brady learned that Martinez was struggling on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The Hyatt Regency Baltimore mezzanine was filled with folks preparing for an evening trip. That's certainly not unusual when you're in a hotel. But this was a journey that wouldn't leave the hotel ballroom. And the "traveling clothes" were black-tie optional. "We're going to take a little walk down Motown Memory Lane," said Christine Snyder. She and husband Larry Snyder were the co-chairs of this, the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland's "23rd Annual Gift of Life Gala," in which several 1960s-era musicians would be performing: The Platters, Charlie Thomas and The Drifters, A Tribute to the Delfonics and Ali Ollie Woodson of The Temptations.
