Kevin Jacob, Parkville SPORT BASEBALL BOYS STATS -- The right-handed junior pitcher won five of his first six games and recorded two saves. Jacob, 6 feet 5 and 190 pounds, struck out 69, walked 10 and had an 0.85 ERA. In one of his best games of the season, Jacob struck out 13 in a 1-0 victory over then-No. 4 Catonsville in a Baltimore County 4A-3A League game. SIDELINES -- Jacob ran cross country in the fall and was a distance runner during the indoor track season. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

The Old Mill High School National Art Honor Society recently undertook an overnight art marathon at the school in Millersville. The goal was to add some color and culture to drab walls.

St. Vincent Pallotti student Joseph Vellanikren, of Laurel, is the 2011 recipient of the St. Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience. The award is given to high school juniors who are members of the National Honor Society, or their school's equivalent honors organization, and who take leadership roles in school or community service activities. St. Michael's College is a Catholic college in Burlington, Vt.

The student: Svetlana Yarosh, 18 School: Centennial High School Special achievement: Yarosh was one of 18 Howard County high school students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. School activities: She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Art Service. College plans: Yarosh will attend the University of Pennsylvania or Princeton University. She hopes to major in computer science or art.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Catonsville ,, awarded 800 undergraduate degrees, 130 master's degrees and doctorates at commencement exercises last night in the Baltimore Arena.Daniel Goldin, administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was the commencement speaker.The 32-year-old university campus also recognized its first 78 inductees to its newly inaugurated chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society.Pub Date: 5/27/98

The student: Corinne Gartner, 17 School: Howard High Special achievement: Vice president of her school's National Honor Society chapter, Corinne was nominated to compete for the National Honor Society Scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. She was also president of her school's National Art Honor Society chapter and president of the Environmental Club. Volunteer work: At 15, Corinne volunteered at Howard County General Hospital's pediatric emergency room for a year and a half.

The Liberty High SHOP (Students Helping Other People) Club and National Honor Society students will participate in the CROP Walk on Sunday to raise money to fight world hunger. The money made will be spent on farm machinery, seed, food, water and other items.The E.S.C.A.P.E. ministries of South Carolina and North Howard County are supporting the fund-raiser. Anyone interested in participating in the walk may meet at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Main Street in Sykesville, at 1:30 p.m.Information: 795-8110.
