SOUTH CARROLL HIGH School will induct 114 juniors and seniors into the National Honor Society during a ceremony held in the school auditorium at 7: 30 p.m. Thursday.Students who qualify for NHS membership are selected each spring and inducted the next fall. NHS members have maintained a minimum of a 3.5 grade-point average and are active in school service and leadership activities.Membership is more than a certificate or an impressive note on a high school record. This attention to grades and school participation is a plus for students applying to colleges.

The River Hill Chapter of the National Honor Society is collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign. Toys can be dropped off at the school's guidance office between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information: 410-313-7400. School offers session on gifted program Marriotts Ridge High School will hold an Information Night for its Gifted and Talented program at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Information will be presented about Mentor classes, which offer students an opportunity to participate in college-level research, help with assembling a portfolio for college admissions and opportunities for participants to choose their own area of study.

LONG REACH High School Principal David Bruzga congratulated 36 students who are now members of the National Honor Society at a Feb. 12 ceremony with all the pomp and circumstance due the honor.The school's Madrigals sang, and music was provided by the Strings Orchestra, directed by Debbie Varga, and the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Matthew Dubbs, during the "pinning" ceremony.Senior class Vice President Gregg Matusewitch introduced the candidates.Theda Mayer, National Honor Society adviser, added her congratulations.

Just before the Christmas break, a number of juniors and seniors at Arundel Senior High School were inducted into the Studemus Chapter of the National Honor Society.The organization, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes students who attain good grades, show leadership and provide service to the community.To be eligible for membership, candidates must have a grade point average of at least 3.5, be a junior or a senior, have attended Arundel Senior for one semester, and be nominated and selected by the faculty council.

One of the top girls lacrosse players in Anne Arundel County, Chesapeake-AA's Erin Tenneson followed her big brother Chris into sports, and her midfield play has been critical to keeping the Cougars (2-2) firmly in the middle of the pack in one of the state's toughest leagues. This season, the senior has 18 goals and three assists as well as 14 draw controls and 19 ground balls. Tenneson, 18, also plays field hockey and basketball for the Cougars. A member of the National Honor Society, she earned a 4.75 GPA last semester.

The Student Government Association and the National Honor Society at Mount Hebron High School distributed food, toiletries and gifts to 113 needy Howard County families this holiday season. The students raised more than $10,000 and collected 54,500 cans of food in the school and community. The money was used to purchase $7,500 worth of food and $3,000 worth of soap, toilet paper and other items to be distributed with gifts purchased by members of the National Honor Society.

Margaret Behlen of Towson has been named to the fall 2011 dean's list at Marietta College, Ohio. She is a graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School. Lauren Dellman of Cockeysville is the recipient of the Joseph and Lesley Urgo Endowed Scholarship at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The scholarship was established in 2010 to benefit students with financial need. Anthony Catalfamo, the son of Alison Owens of Towson, was inducted into the National English Honor Society and National Honor Society at Randolph-Macon Academy, Va. Tony is a sophomore at Randolph-Macon.

Northeast High School's class of 1993 took its final bows Saturday, and a number of students walked away with awards for distinguished work in the classroom and a variety of extracurricular activities.They included 24 students who received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award for seniors who have maintained a 3.3 grade-point average or better since ninth grade and scored in the 80th percentile on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
