In a ceremony with candles, flutes, piano music, and speeches, 22 North County High School students were inducted into the National Honor Society recently and presented with laminated certificates and little gold pins. For decades the hallmark of high school high achievement, the ceremony is apt to be remembered by two of those students with something more like resentment than pride. For reasons not fully explained, they were initially rejected for membership. Only their complaints and parental intervention got them in.Alexander Hicks, 18, didn't hear that until his 7: 17 a.m. advanced Spanish class the day before the March 25 induction ceremony when someone tapped him on the shoulder and passed him a piece of paper from the office saying that he'd been accepted into the society.

We were given a bird feeder for Christmas, and with typical timing and organizational skills, I got it hung the other day, right outside the window over my desk.(I'm always at least two years behind the times in fashion. I might as well be a season late for the birds.)Mistake! I work with one eye on the bird feeder, ready to freeze all action when a client alights. Then I am torn between just watching and poring over the bird book to see what variety is visiting. I might as well go for the former and do my research later because I haven't been able to find one yet.(I didn't bother to look up the robins on the ground.
