St. Vincent Pallotti High School held its annual National Honor Society recognition and induction ceremony April 26. The following students were named National Honor Society members: Nandi Baccus, Sam Besse, Randy-Ceasar Abogodie, Jacquelyn Endres, Isabelle Fromm, Peter Grenchik, Lamar Johnson, Sunghoon (Sean) Lee, Danielle McCants, Richard Moyer, Morenike Oyebade, Nathan Sampson, Brandon Sauls, Vincent Schembari, Zachary Elias Seyko, Aja Woodson and Xiao-Wen (Kacy) Yang.

McDaniel College announced that Mable Buchanan, a senior at North Carroll High School, will be among the four students in the inaugural Dorsey Scholars Program at McDaniel College this fall. The scholarship, the highest academic honor at the college, includes full tuition, and room and board for four years — a value of more than $180,000. Buchanan had a 4.0 GPA at North Carroll and was a member of the National Honor Society. A drum major and section leader, she also performed in the pit orchestra, wind ensembles and chorus, according to a release from McDaniel.

Boy Scout Troop 936, which meets at Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company, awarded Zack Griffin his Eagle Scout medal on March 22. This was their second Eagle Scout in six months. Requirements to meet this award included fundraising, contacting business support and supervising the clearing and mulching of the chosen project, the Agape House. This achievement was acknowledged by personal letters from Gen. Alexander of the NSA, a flag flown over the capitol in his honor by Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger and a signed photo by Bear Grylls, recent Chief Scout for the UK and celebrity of "Man vs. Wild.

An Anne Arundel County math teacher who says she has been followed and hounded by a student she helped keep out of the National Honor Society has twice called the police for help and appealed to fellow teachers for advice on dealing with the situation.Kay Sokoloff, a 51-year-old geometry teacher who has taught at Chesapeake High School for more than 17 years, told police that her former student, Franklin Pierce Wright III, come to her house late at night angry that she had black-balled his application to the honor society.

Elizabeth Koehling, daughter of Rena and Steve Koehling, of Columbia, was named to the dean's list for the 2011 fall semester at Lynchburg College, in Lynchburg, Va. As a Freshman, Koehling was also recently accepted for admittance into the selective athletic training major program at Lynchburg and on April 13, was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national honor society for college freshmen.

Emily Weiman Archbishop Spalding, junior, pitcher Weiman finished the season at 17-3, leading the Cavaliers to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. Weiman had 305 strikeouts in 136 innings pitched — an average of 15 strikeouts per game — and an 0.15 ERA. She also threw four no-hitters, including two perfect games. A North Carolina State commitment, she was a captain and is a member of the National Honor Society.

In a ceremony with candles, flutes, piano music, and speeches, 22 North County High School students were inducted into the National Honor Society recently and presented with laminated certificates and little gold pins.For decades the hallmark of high school high achievement, the ceremony is apt to be remembered by two of those students with something more like resentment than pride. For reasons not fully explained, they were initially rejected for membership. Only their complaints and parental intervention got them in.Alexander Hicks, 18, didn't hear that until his 7: 17 a.m. advanced Spanish class the day before the March 25 induction ceremony when someone tapped him on the shoulder and passed him a piece of paper from the office saying that he'd been accepted into the society.

South Carroll High School seniors Tracey McElroy and David Lubitz were chosen students of the month for November by the Student Recognition Committee.Tracey is the daughter of Bonnie and Jay McElroy of Mount Airy. She is vice president of the Student Government Association, a National Honor Society member, graphics editor of the school newspaper and a class executive board member.She also is a champion varsity tennis player and manager of the men's varsity soccer team. She has won numerous academic contests.

Aria Real, a student at Aberdeen High School, was the winner of a Toyota Camry donated by Jones Junction for the school's recent after prom party. Aberdeen High PTSA president, Keith Bruso worked with Jones Junction to secure the donation. Aria is an honor student who has been accepted into High Point University for the coming fall semester with the class of 2017 to study Vocal Performance and Interior Design. She said in a press release she is blessed to have received this car, because it is one less thing to worry about as she transitions to North Carolina.

The following students have been named Peer Advisors for the 2011-2012 academic year at Western New England University, in Springfield, Mass.: Matthew Sherry , of Ellicott City, a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering; and Ryan Mastalerz , of Elkridge, a sophomore majoring in computer sciences. Peer Advisors are a team of students who seek to assist in the university transition. Each first year student is assigned to a peer mentor who serves as a source of information, point of first contact and conduit to university programs and support services.

Rachel Filderman and William Plowe , both of Columbia, have been inducted in the McDonogh School's chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a national honor society recognizing academic achievement. Ryan Konstanzer , of Reservoir High School, and Erin Geoghan , of River Hill High School, are the 2011 recipients of the Aronson/Willis Memorial Award. Each student was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and received a certificate from the Howard County General Hospital Professional Staff.

South Carroll High School's Student Recognition Committee selected seniors Dave Keefer, Ashly Ebling, Sarah Jenkins and David DeMay recently as students of the month.Keefer is active in football, basketball, Varsity Club, Class of 1999 Executive Board and Student Government Association and is a student aide. He has been class vice president all four years of high school.Ebling is SGA vice president, National Honor Society secretary, co-editor of the school newspaper, a peer facilitator, tennis player and member of the Stagelighters drama group and class executive board.
