EACH STUDENT inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) must display scholarship, character, service and leadership.On Jan. 25, 12 members of the Glenelg High School Class of 1996 took part in an induction ceremony.Jennifer Block, Lauren Brown, Karyn Casper, Michaelean Ferguson, Lisa Fish, John Lamparski, Lauren Paper, Teresa Piekarski, James Sinon, Christopher Stepp, Sarah Stockbridge and Manuel Torres pledged their commitment to maintaining their high standards in a ceremony led by NHS President John Habert.

An Anne Arundel County math teacher who says she has been followed and hounded by a student she helped keep out of the National Honor Society has twice called the police for help and appealed to fellow teachers for advice on dealing with the situation.Kay Sokoloff, a 51-year-old geometry teacher who has taught at Chesapeake High School for more than 17 years, told police that her former student, Franklin Pierce Wright III, come to her house late at night angry that she had black-balled his application to the honor society.

Elizabeth Koehling, daughter of Rena and Steve Koehling, of Columbia, was named to the dean's list for the 2011 fall semester at Lynchburg College, in Lynchburg, Va. As a Freshman, Koehling was also recently accepted for admittance into the selective athletic training major program at Lynchburg and on April 13, was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national honor society for college freshmen.

Howard County high schools are standardized in many ways - bell schedules, cafeteria lunches and county curriculums to name a few. However, the selection process for admission to the National Honor Society, as well as member expectations and service requirements, is different at all 12 high schools. The only standardization the county has for entry into the honor society is a cumulative minimum 3.4 grade-point average. Most schools use teacher recommendations, a personal essay and a list of extracurricular activities to determine a student's eligibility for entry.

South Carroll High School's Student Recognition Committee selected seniors Dave Keefer, Ashly Ebling, Sarah Jenkins and David DeMay recently as students of the month.Keefer is active in football, basketball, Varsity Club, Class of 1999 Executive Board and Student Government Association and is a student aide. He has been class vice president all four years of high school.Ebling is SGA vice president, National Honor Society secretary, co-editor of the school newspaper, a peer facilitator, tennis player and member of the Stagelighters drama group and class executive board.

Emily Weiman Archbishop Spalding, junior, pitcher Weiman finished the season at 17-3, leading the Cavaliers to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. Weiman had 305 strikeouts in 136 innings pitched — an average of 15 strikeouts per game — and an 0.15 ERA. She also threw four no-hitters, including two perfect games. A North Carolina State commitment, she was a captain and is a member of the National Honor Society.
