Girls lacrosse Player of the Year Carly Napora McDonogh The area's top line defender excelled in every way for a team that allowed just 6.9 goals per game. Quick and fearless, Napora stood up to 11 charging foes this season and took 43 charges during her Eagles career. The senior had the quick feet and controlled stick to contain attackers one-on-one, but she also had the field sense and anticipation to slip easily into the slides. Tenacious in practice as well as in games, Napora challenged herself to improve each day, and that helped her play a much bigger game than her physical stature might indicate.

The Chris Napora who rung up a .382 batting average and .764 slugging percentage while serving as Glen Burnie's designated hitter last spring no longer exists. This year, she's even better. And for so many reasons. For one thing, she earned the starting job at third base by working diligently on her fielding. And she improved her quickness by running on the track, exercising and lifting weights almost immediately after last season ended, losing around seven pounds in the process. She also concentrated on lowering her strikeouts by not always swinging for the fences, even though her power had resulted in four doubles, four triples, three home runs and 20 RBIs, as well as All-County honors.

When Chris Napora's name appears in Glen Burnie's lineup, it's usually for one reason: to hit.Yesterday at No. 3 Severna Park, she had the two biggest hits, drilling a triple to deep center field and com-ing around to score on a poor relay throw, then lining a three-run homer in the $H seventh to break open a close game.Coupled with the tough pitching of junior Denise Warren, who allowed just four hits and struck out six, No. 6 Glen Burnie ended Severna Park's winning steak at seven games with a 4-0 victory.

Every team wants to get off to a fast start, but No. 1 Glen Burnie has done more than that.Through their first three games, the Gophers have been a blur.Yesterday, they used solid defense and timely hitting to remain undefeated and hand No. 12 North County its third straight loss, 5-1.Senior Samantha Miller picked up her second win, allowing four hits and an unearned run. She pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts in last week's 21-1 rout of Annapolis. Also last week, senior Denise Warren struck out nine and gave up three hits in a 14-1 victory over Meade.

For No. 3 Glen Burnie, yesterday's game at No. 2 Severna Park produced a win, a loss and confidence that another victory is forthcoming. The Gophers rallied for three runs in the sixth inning, two coming on a single by Chris Napora, and held on for a 3-2 win. Rarely has a team already eliminated from the playoffs and with seemingly little to play for been this dangerous. Then again, No. 13 Old Mill didn't know until after yesterday's 7-4 upset at No. 2 Glen Burnie that it couldn't get into the postseason. The Patriots (12-5) have brought down the top two teams in the metro area this week, including Monday's 4-3 win over No. 1 Severna Park that ended the Falcons' winning streak at 13 games. They have won eight of their last nine.Yesterday, they collected 10 hits and took advantage of five Glen Burnie errors to score five unearned runs off Denise Warren (6-3)
