Last year, Dutch filmmaker George Sluizer made a tight, nasty little venom strike of a movie called "The Vanishing." It was bad news for cats and ardent young men: it told how curiosity always killed them. The movie was an astringent art house success par excellence. That means that because of its brilliant reviews, it was seen by at least 400, possibly as many as 432, people worldwide. American producers, knowing a good thing when they saw it, bought the rights to the story. So now here is the big-budget American version of "The Vanishing," starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Nancy Travis.

"Bogus" isn't. But it tries to be.By casting a kid who's not so much an actor to be watched as a moppet to be hugged ... by getting Whoopi Goldberg to do essentially the same shtick she perfected in "Ghost" ... by suggesting a 7-year-old could safely walk the streets of Newark, N.J., at night ... by adopting a style that's some weird marriage of "Harvey" and Federico Fellini, complete with huge, unseen friends and circus-shrouded dreams ...It's all pretty fluffy and phony and forgettable.

People who use people are the greediest people in the world -- and that includes movie producers. Thus "Greedy," which arrives advanced by a hilarious and promising trailer that's been playing for weeks now, is not only a shocking disappointment but feels almost like a swindle. The movie makes you feel used. Its trailer seems to promise a deliciously cynical view of an insanely greedy family, in which cousins maneuver and counter-maneuver for position as they try to kiss up to a rich, hopelessly debauched old uncle to get first in line for the coming inheritance.

News item: Food Network sensation Emeril Lagasse is signed by NBC to star in a sitcom about a TV chef with a family. To: Mr. Jeff Zucker President, NBC Entertainment Dear Jeff: Thanks for the green light on "A Spice of Life." (It's a working title. We're working on it.) Those who love Emeril and his Cajun ways from "Emeril Live!" will still see him holler his trademark "BAM!" and "Let's kick it up a notch!" as he throws spices and ingredients into the mix. The adoring studio audience will play itself - just like on the cable show - and a small band plays for him. He'll still be forceful, charming and brash.
