Recovering from a heart attack, 70-year-old Jack Scanlan gives his family a terrific present: he drops dead."Passed Away" chronicles the large and unruly Scanlan clan's attempts to deal with this wonderful opportunity: a few squander it in mawkish excess like "grief" or "depression," but most of them see it for what it is, a chance for romantic fulfillment, career advancement, free food and booze, whatever. As for Jack (Jack Warden), lying there pink and frosty, he seems to be enjoying it as well: Party hearty, dead dude.

How many times now have we seen two television characters interrupted in the throes of passion by one or both of their beepers going off? Think it's happened enough that we can safely call it a cliche for illustrating tension between personal and professional lives? The shopworn beeper scene is right there smack dab in the middle of "Almost Perfect," a new CBS sitcom about two young professionals, which premieres at 8:30 tomorrow night (WJZ, Channel 13). But I found myself smiling anyway at a small, original punch line delivered between the beeps.

Beverly Hills, Calif.Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson actually enjoy talking to each other. And talking is the order of the day for the three stars of "Three Men and a Little Lady," which opened on Wednesday. They're supposed to feed chunks of chat to the huge crowd of entertainment journalists packing the ballroom of a chic Beverly Hills hotel. They don't have to talk to each other. They want to.During five-minute breaks as they move from table to table, Mr. Danson and Mr. Guttenberg put their heads together over a long table of these occasions' ubiquitous kiwi fruit.

Matthew Modine has gone to the dogs. And no, I'm not talking about the fact that his last movie, "Bye Bye, Love," was a box-office bowser, skedaddling out of the theaters faster than a mutt with a Chevy to chase.I mean he's really a dog in "Fluke." Four paws, shaggy coat, wet nose, mouth full of sharp teeth and dog breath.Matt's life as a dog begins when his character's speeding car goes airborne and fetches up, grille-first, against a nice sturdy tree. Blackout. When he comes to, he's no longer a stressed-out yuppie but a cute little puppy named Fluke.

Fred Gwynne -- a '60s pop-culture icon thanks to his TV roles as Officer Muldoon on "Car 54, Where Are You?" and patriarch Herman Munster on "The Munsters" -- has never really disappeared from view.Mr. Gwynne made his film debut in Marlon Brando's "On the Waterfront," and more recently has been seen in "Fatal Attraction," "Pet Sematary" and "The Secret of My Success."But the veteran character actor is positively ubiquitous right now, what with a pair of films that have opened just a week apart.
