Kerosene spilled on an operating unvented space heater ignited and destroyed a two-story house in Sykesville Sunday night.Bob Thomas, Maryland deputy chief fire marshal, said the two-alarm blaze caused about $100,000 damage to the wood frame dwelling in the 700 block of Church St.Mr. Thomas said Michael Smith, 33, son of the owner, Nancy Smith, was alone in the house about 10:40 p.m. when he tried to refuel the kerosene heater.Mr. Thomas said that Mr. Smith accidentally spilled fuel over the heater and on the floor.

On May 17, 2009 NANCY WILKINS-SMITH; loving mother of Morgan, Tyra and Matthew Smith. She is also survived by her mother, Rita Greene, five sisters, five brothers and a host of other relatives and friends. Friends may visit the family owned MARCH FUNERAL HOME, WEST, INC., 4300 Wabash Avenue, on Satureday after 9 a.m. where family will receive friends on Sunday at 1 p.m. followed by funeral service at 1:30.

A private foundation fighting to preserve a 300-acre farm in Columbia scored a legal victory last week that could prevent the property from becoming a regional park.Even though the outcome is months away, the latest action will give lawyers representing the Elizabeth "Nancy" C. Smith Foundation more ammunition in their fight to preserve Blandair farm.The foundation, established by friends of the reclusive Smith, is suing Smith's heirs to prevent them from selling the farm to Howard County, which has plans to build a park, replete with soccer fields and nature trails.
