At the start of "The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best," a New York musician loses his girlfriend and his day job, then botches a gig as a singing moose in a kindergarten class. In desperate straits, he partners with an eccentric motormouth performer who relies on kiddie instruments like kazoos. Along with a sassy female rock entrepreneur, they embark on a tour that ends with a battle of the bands in Los Angeles. With a slew of original songs and two lead characters who could take turns in an "I'm With Stupid" T-shirt, "The Brooklyn Brothers" aims for a blend of farce, music and heart.

The cherry and nutmeg-striped headscarf hasn't been worn in 85 years, but it is as easy for Nan Agle to envision as if it still were tied to her "Mammy's" head. The kerchief is bold and lively and radiates spirit. Eliza's spirit. Eliza Ann Benson, a former slave, helped raise Nan and her two older sisters at the turn of the 20th century. Before that, she defied the era (1880s Baltimore) and the odds to become the court-appointed guardian of her former white owners' four orphaned children, including Agle's mother.

Nan Duskin is upscale. Just how upscale? The Philadelphia-based retailer, which has one of its three stores in Cross Keys, sells $1,100 silk Chanel blouses and $2,400 Hermes pocketbooks so small that you'd be hard-pressed to fit a brush and comb inside. But don't feel intimidated, says Nan Duskin's new vice president and manager for Baltimore, Jane Ann Simpson."I want to change the perception that we are intimidating. We shouldn't be," says Ms. Simpson. "I don't want people to feel as if they have to dress to the nines to come in here.

N an Rosenthal loves to be creative with her style. In her work as an event coordinator and public relations consultant for nonprofit organizations, she must stay professional. The 72-year-old Pikesville resident looked stylishly put-together when we "Glimpsed" her at a holiday party thrown by Sascha Wolhandler and Steve Suser. "I usually wear something fun - a pin or some kind of accessory, something that brings some personality [to the outfit]. ... It makes me feel better, and it creates conversation, too."

I watched the Rev. Al Sharpton last week doing lots of TV grandstanding at being America's conscience, just as he tried to be in the matter of Don Imus. I want to say, he's not my choice for this role. I'll listen to this big self-important windbag when he apologizes for helping Tawana Brawley put over her farce kidnap attack many years ago. (Sharpton has yet to admit he did anything wrong in backing a total liar and conniver while he pursued his own agenda.) So this most recent outing was in connection with Paris Hilton, who finally came to the senses we didn't even know she had. She did her mea culpa with Barbara Walters.

Tipping the Velvet is something new for American television: a lesbian coming-of-age drama. And the medium is better for it. The three-night miniseries starting tonight on BBC America (not available on all cable systems) is superior to any made-for-TV movie or miniseries the networks offered during May sweeps. Outstanding writing and sure-handed direction not only bring new insight to a historical period remembered mostly through the haze of cliche, but also enrich our notion of appropriate literary heroes and heroines.
