Carol Sholes, director of information systems for Syracuse Newspapers, has been named to head the department that maintains computer technology and software systems at the Baltimore Sun Co. Sholes will take over as vice president of information technology by Jan. 2. She will replace Phil Rugile, who resigned July 28. Lenora Howze has been named vice president of advertising at The Sun, the newspaper's publisher and chief executive officer, Michael E. Waller, announced yesterday. Howze, 40, an employee at the newspaper since 1990, was formerly the director of classified advertising. Waller said she was chosen for her accomplishments in the classified department as well as in her other positions, which included classified telemarketing manager, a sales manager in national advertising and division manager in advertising marketing.

Timothy E. Ryan, vice president of circulation for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, will join The Baltimore Sun Co. next month as head of the departments that print and deliver the newspaper. Ryan, 41, will become vice president of circulation and operations effective July 10. Sun Publisher Michael E. Waller described the position as one that oversees everything that happens to the newspaper "from the time it leaves the newsroom until it arrives at the customer." Ryan played a key role in successful efforts to enhance sales of both Philadelphia newspapers during a period when many major metropolitan papers were seeing stagnant or declining circulation.

In a move to beef up the Washington-Baltimore effort to land the Olympics in 2012, the group working on the region's bid has named 14 new members to its board of directors. Among them, former Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke and John S. Hendricks, founder and chairman of Discovery Communications Inc., will serve as vice chairmen. Hendricks also is founder of a planned women's professional soccer league. "We have been very fortunate that our bid effort has attracted some of the most committed and talented members of the Washington-Baltimore community," said John Morton III, chairman of the Washington-Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition.

Mary S. Esmond, director of Brand Builders at The Baltimore Sun Co., was named yesterday as vice president of new business development. Esmond, 38, replaces Jean Halle, who in December was named chief financial officer and vice president of strategic development of Times Mirror Interactive, a new subsidiary of the newspaper's parent corporation. "I'm thrilled," Esmond said. "I think it's a great opportunity to lead a very talented department and oversee improvements to the current products and services we offer, as well as develop new products that offer new resources and options for customers."

The Baltimore Sun Co. named Guy L. Gilmore vice president of circulation yesterday.Gilmore had been circulation director at the Portland Oregonian since 1996. In that time, the newspaper had back-to-back years of circulation growth. Gilmore also launched an incentive program for home delivery agents and improved customer service.Gilmore will be responsible for leading The Sun's effort to increase circulation and maintain the highest quality customer service.Before working at the Oregonian, Gilmore headed circulation at the morning Tennessean and the afternoon Nashville Banner.

Carroll, editor of The Sun and senior vice president of the Baltimore Sun Co., was named a corporate vice president yesterday of the newspaper's parent company, Los Angeles-based Times Mirror Co.Carroll, who retains his previous responsibilities and titles, received the corporate vice president promotion along with five other Times Mirror executives."

The Baltimore Sun Co. announced three promotions yesterday in its Sun Park and organization development operations.Bruce McEntee, who has served as director of operations, Sun Park, was promoted to vice president of operations, Sun Park.Scott Moores, who had been director of organization development, was named vice president, organization development.Sharon Fitzpatrick, director of human resources, will succeed Moores as director of organization development.The promotions are effective immediately, said Michael E. Joseph T. "Jody" Landers III, a key adviser and director for fiscal affairs for Baltimore City Council President Lawrence A. Bell III, was named yesterday as the new executive vice president for the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors.Landers' appointment came after a six-month nationwide search in which more than 100 candidates were reviewed. He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and overall administration of the GBBR beginning Nov. 10."One of the first tasks that I set for myself is to meet with all the leadership and the officers on the board and then to meet with the staff members here and kind of hone in on what are the key issues that need to be addressed," he said yesterday from the new GBBR offices in Lutherville.
