Adele, Lady Gaga , and Mumford & Sons have the highest-selling albums of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which released mid-year sales figures Wednesday. The three artists also have the top three digital albums from January through July 3, the period the new data covers. But the highlight of the report is that album sales are up for the first time since 2004. It's a small, 3.6 percent increase over the same period last year, but it's a bump nonetheless for an industry desperately looking for good news wherever it can find 'em.  Adele's "21" has sold 2.5 units; Gaga's "Born this Way" sold 1.5 and Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" has moved 982,000 unites.

"Big Chill" director Lawrence Kasdan has come up with yet another self-consciously witty ensemble comedy featuring a memorable gaggle of misfits in "Mumford." But unlike "Grand Canyon," his superlative 1991 comedy-drama of Los Angeles manners, "Mumford" goes the Frank Capra route, undermining the movie's more eccentric charms. The movie's title derives both from the town in which it is set and from a psychologist who works there. Played by Loren Dean with a never-changing passive smile, Mumford has recently arrived and set up shop on the town's pretty main street.

Never mind defeating Bob Ehrlich in the governor's race, or sparring with rival du jour Peter Franchot. Or even rounding up the votes to close a billion-dollar budget shortfall. The real test of Gov. Martin O'Malley's moxie yesterday was this: In his first-ever foray into the world of cyber-bowling, would he be able to keep his ball out of the gutter? Moreover, could he do well enough to beat a septuagenarian who walks with a polished wooden cane? "Everyone seems to know what the Wii is," O'Malley joked to a packed audience at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville.

Jailed and awaiting trial on armed robbery and attempted murder charges, a 19-year-old Middle River man is facing new charges that he arranged to have two witnesses in that case killed. Joshua Anthony Mumford was arrested Monday night and charged with two counts of soliciting first-degree murder, court records show. Police persuaded Mumford's cellmate at the Baltimore County Detention Center to wear a digital recording device, which captured Mumford refusing suggestions that the witnesses could be kidnapped and held for a while rather than killed, according to court documents.
