If you are looking for a group of people that have an appreciation and deep love for the beauty of Howard County farmland, you need not look any further than the Mullinix family. I sit with my father on our front porch in Dayton every season as we're both rendered speechless by the beautiful sunset before us. At these moments I can't imagine anyone being so lucky, so fortunate as to enjoy this amazement. From our front porch I sit in awe of property that my family has owned for as long as I have lived.

Katie Mullinix seems to have everything to be successful that any pitcher would want. The Salisbury senior has a relaxed attitude and confidence to use any of her six pitches at any time. That combination helped her open the softball season by throwing back-to-back gems (no-hitter and perfect game) March 1 and March 2 that will earn her notice in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" section Monday. "It was a great way to start the season," Mullinix said Tuesday night while on a break at her job at a Salisbury fitness gym. "It was our first games, and everybody was a little uncertain about how we'd play."

Visitors heading to the Mullinix farm near Lisbon for a day of free tours and activities Saturday might want to take a careful look around. The family has one of the few full-scale beef cattle operations in the state - the only one in Howard County - and that part of the farm likely will disappear in a few years. "I love what I'm doing," said Gene Mullinix, who runs the farm with his wife, Charlotte, their family and several workers, "but it's a dying way of life." The Mullinixes' farmland is in agricultural preservation, and Gene Mullinix said he will continue with some kind of farming.
