San Diego -- The baby of the bowls is off to an encouraging start. Prodded by the Mountain West Conference to launch a second postseason game in San Diego, certified for play last spring by the NCAA and buoyed by the appearance of the Naval Academy and its legion of fans for the kickoff event, the Poinsettia Bowl is headed to an initial success. In the past year, everything has fallen conveniently into place for officials of the well-received Holiday Bowl, who have an added starter for their work log. "All of a sudden, things started building up, and here we are," said Holiday Bowl executive director Bruce Binkowski.

Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk said here Saturday afternoon that Big East commissioner John Marinatto assured him in a telephone conversation earlier in the day that the Midshipmen are still among several teams being considered for membership in the restructured league and that no official bids have been offered. "We're still in the running, there's no question," Gladchuk said during Navy's game against Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium. Gladchuk said the information he received from Marinatto disputes a report by ESPN that said five schools, including Air Force and Boise State, were extended invitations to join the league.

WASHINGTON -- It would have been daunting enough for the Bowl Championship Series to endure legislators' philosophical questions about how college football determines a national champion. But what if the House Energy and Commerce Committee interrogators decided yesterday to put aside their public-policy hats and act like the fans and alumni that they are? What if Rep. Fred Upton (Michigan '75) decided to demonstrate his allegiance to the maize and blue for everyone to see? What if Rep. Lee Terry (Nebraska '84)

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- In a remote corner of this vast western preserve, the five wolves of the Rose Creek pack work their way through canyons and take up their positions behind a herd of elk grazing on the valley floor. Before first light arrives, before the stray coyotes come to scavenge, before the dedicated National Park Service biologists tracking them arise from their bunks, the wolves have silently selected an elk calf, chased it down, feasted on their kill and disappeared back into the mountains.

The Mountain West Conference has been the baby of Division I basketball, in existence for only a little more than a decade. No. 15 New Mexico, No. 17 BYU and No. 23 UNLV proved this week how much the conference is growing up. Those teams are in a three-way tie for first place in the conference and represent the first time the league has placed three teams in the Associated Press Top 25. "The exposure for the league is great," UNLV's ...

The coordinators of football officiating for the Mountain West Conference and the Big 12 agreed Monday that the back judge who called Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor for unsportsmanlike conduct at a critical juncture in Saturday's 35-34 home loss to Air Force made the right decision. A statement released Monday by the Mountain West said, "After thorough review of the incident following the Navy touchdown in overtime, it is clear a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct/taunting was warranted under NCAA Football Playing Rule 9-2-1-a.-1 and was properly administered by the CFO West officiating crew.
