Thomas Fruscello, a teacher at Mount Hebron High School, used an automotive analogy to make his point about the physical condition of the school to the Howard County Board of Education during a lengthy public budget hearing last week. "It's our educational vehicle," he said. "Most assuredly it has a good sound body, brick and block, but in almost every other category this building fails to meet the needs of its population. It is a Chevrolet Corvair of school buildings -- unsafe at any speed."

One graduating senior is bound for the Juilliard School to study clarinet. Another got a four-year scholarship to Morgan State University. One learned to edit and compose stories on videotape, and another discovered he had strong artistic talents.They were among 290 seniors who graduated from Mount Hebron High School yesterday at an afternoon ceremony at Merriweather Post Pavilion.Guidance counselor Jane Scott described Mount Hebron's Class of 1994 as "very solid. They consistently earned high grades."

Mount Hebron parents say they will file an appeal with the Howard County school board to protest the transfer of their school's top three administrators.Parents say the transfers would jar the stability that Mount Hebron has enjoyed for years and disrupt plans for the school to go forward with site-based management next year.Marty Bode, leader of a group of parents filing the appeal, called the transfers "a slap in the face to Mount Hebron."Mount Hebron is steeped in tradition that we feel goes from the administrative level to the student level," she said.

Current and former members of the Mount Hebron community are invited to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of Mount Hebron High School with a tailgate party, starting at 4 p.m. Sept. 16, before the second game of the football season. Festivities, which include food, entertainment and games, will be held on the Mount Hebron baseball field. The football game, in which the Mount Hebron Vikings play the Centennial Eagles, is to start at 7 p.m. Mount Hebron opened its doors in 1965 and operated as a middle school until 1967.

One team was the No. 1 seed, and the other was No. 4, but for most of the match, it was hard to tell which was which.In the end, though, Liberty showed that it was the top seed in the Maryland Class 2 volleyball tournament. With a 15-13, 16-18, 15-6, 15-10 victory over Rockville last night at Parkville High School, the Lions advanced to the state championship game.Liberty (16-2) will play Mount Hebron (15-3), which beat previously undefeated North Caroline, 15-13, 15-5, 15-8, in the other semifinal.

A revised plan for renovation of Mount Hebron High School that school officials plan to present next month "is a step in the right direction" according to the leaders of a group of parents and staff at the school who have opposed previous construction drafts. The new plan calls for adding five to 10 classrooms and increasing the size of hallways and the cafeteria. A schematic design will be brought to the school board for approval April 10, said Ken Roey, executive director of facilities and management for the school system.

The students performed Irving Berlin's spirited musical last week, showing the audience there really is "No Business Like Show Business." Annie Get Your Gun tells the story of two rival sharpshooters -- Annie Oakley and Frank Butler -- who fall in love, even as they compete to earn the title of "champ-een" in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

MOORESTOWN, N.J. -- Mount Hebron's status as the nation's No. 1 girls lacrosse team was preserved with a dramatic 10-8 victory over Moorestown yesterday that was not secured until the final moments. It took the second of All-American Megan Bosica's two goals with 1:58 left to play to give the Vikings (12-0), rated No. 1 by LaxPower.com, a bit of breathing room against Moorestown, rated No. 2, en route to their 91st consecutive win, a streak dating back nearly five years. Visiting Long Reach used a three-back rushing attack to take control early and beat Howard County rival Mount Hebron, 33-14, yesterday. Senior running back Landon Tews (eight carries, 40 yards) had three of the Lightning's five touchdowns, on runs of 1, 4 and 5 yards. Tews, slotback Vince Furby and quarterback Keith Richardson combined for 278 of Long Reach's 340 rushing yards. Furby (six carries, 138 yards) started the scoring with an 80-yard run in the first quarter. Richardson (17, 100)
