Mount Hebron's girls basketball team completed its dream season Saturday with a 55-40 victory over Poly for the Class 2A state championship at UMBC's RAC Arena. The No. 4-ranked Vikings finished 28-0 and earned the program's seventh state title, joining DuVal High School in Prince George's County with the most championships in state tournament history. Mount Hebron's season featured some close games, including a 47-44 victory over Atholton for the Howard County title; a 47-43 win over River Hill in the regional semifinal; a 39-37 victory over Gwynn Park in the regional final; and a 54-53 win over previously unbeaten Winters Mill in the state semifinals.

The Howard County Youth Program Inc. has announced the winner of the 2007 Christopher Kelly Memorial Scholarship: Lisa E. Alban of Mount Hebron High School. Alban, 17, an Ellicott City resident who started playing baseball at age 9 in North Carolina, has worked as a camp counselor and baseball umpire for HCYP. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and has been accepted at Virginia Tech. The scholarship, in its 14th year, was created to commemorate the life of Christopher Kelly, a young baseball player at HCYP who died in a bicycle accident.

Host Mount Hebron became the third Howard County team to qualify for the state basketball semifinals by routing Towson, 78-53, last night in the girls Class 2A, Region II championship game.The second-ranked Vikings (21-3) used pressure to create turnovers early and led Towson (20-3), 22-6, after the first quarter."Our defensive pressure really caused them problems," said Vikings coach Dave Greenberg. "We went after them from the beginning with full-court pressure, and they really had trouble handling it."

The Mount Hebron lacrosse team celebrated twice yesterday. The first time came with seconds left in regulation, when the Vikings thought they had the Class 1A-2A state title wrapped up.The second time came several minutes later in sudden-death overtime when Chris Vissers scored the winning goal in the Vikings' 8-7 victory over defending state champion North Harford at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.After North Harford's Chuck Kelly scored from 10 yards out with 16 seconds left to force the overtime, Vissers won the game by depositing a Mike McQuaid crossing pass into the net with 1:02 left in the three-minute sudden-death period.

Phil Chenier scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter, as host Wilde Lake built a 10-point lead and went on to beat Mount Hebron, 75-64, in a Howard County League game last night.Chenier, the Wildecats center and son of the former Bullets' great, helped Wilde Lake break open a one-point game at the half, with a 14-5 spurt to start the second half, giving it a 44-34 lead midway through the third quarter. Chenier scored all four of his baskets on lay-ups, and teammate Randy Miller added four points during the stretch.

Representatives from Nationwide Insurance Co.'s Prom Promise campaign presented Mount Hebron High School students with a $400 check yesterday, making the school the county's biggest winner this year in the anti-drunken driving contest.Carol Katsampis, an independent agent with Nationwide Insurance who has an office in Ellicott City, said officials surprised the nearly 1,300-member student body by reading the news over the intercom system yesterday.Mount Hebron placed fourth of 20 prize winners in "Division A" of the state competition, open to schools with 950 students or more, said Sam Bradshaw, Prom Promise's regional coordinator.

RIVERDALE -- Top-ranked Mount Hebron and No. 3 Old Mill advanced to the semifinals of the IAABO Christmas Invitational with quarterfinal victories yesterday at Parkdale High.The Vikings (4-1) defeated Prince George's Oxon Hill, 57-44, and the Patriots (4-0) defeated Coolidge of Washington, 64-52.Sophomore Emily Yanero led Mount Hebron with 26 points, hitting on 13 of 19 shots. The Vikings will meet Springbrook -- ranked No. 5 by The Washington Post -- in a semifinal tonight at 8.But Mount Hebron may be without point guard Erica McCauley, who is suffering from a worsening case of bronchitis, said coach Dave Greenberg.
