Prosecutors yesterday dropped a first-degree murder charge against a Southeast Baltimore man police are investigating as a possible serial killer, saying there was insufficient evidence against him.Assistant State's Attorney Ilene Nathan said the charge against John Dean Powell could be refiled later. The investigation into the killing of Cecelia R. Mosca is continuing, the prosecutor said, adding that she is waiting for results of DNA tests in the slaying.Powell, 36, had been charged in the death of the 27-year-old woman, whose body was found under a pile of trash in a recessed stairwell of Lombard Middle School on March 15. Police are exploring links between Ms. Mosca's slaying and those of three other women beaten and strangled in the same area of Southeast Baltimore since October 1993.

Where is virtue? Where is good? Why don't people behave as they should?" The oh-so-sincere character who raises those perfectly reasonable questions in the new opera Volpone never does get an answer. You won't either, but you'll probably be too busy chuckling to care. Volpone, "unfaithfully based on the eponymous comedy by Ben Jonson," bounded onto the cozy stage at the Barns of Wolf Trap Wednesday night with a caffeinated score by John Musto and a rhyme-happy libretto by Mark Campbell.

WAGGAMAN, La. -- Nearly a half-hour's drive outside of New Orleans in surroundings only a little more inviting than a swamp, you'll find a dilapidated roadhouse by the side of U.S. 90. Inside this big white wooden shack, you will probably wait quite a good long time for a table and experience service that while seldom actually impolite, is not what you would ever call refined.Throngs of passionate eaters put up with whatever inconvenience is involved because Mosca's serves what every serious traveling gourmet acknowledges as the finest Creole-Italian food in Louisiana.
