SEATTLE -- The Orioles can only wonder how good the club might be with an everyday Glenn Davis, but for now they must settle for an occasional flash of his substantial talent.Davis hit a pair of two-run home runs in Tuesday night's 13-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners, raising hope that he was about to re-assert himself as one of the premier power hitters in the game. But he was not in the lineup yesterday."He was a little stiff this morning, so I wanted to get him a day off after the night game," manager Johnny Oates said.

A day after Kyle Boller produced the most efficient quarterback performance in Ravens' history, coach Brian Billick didn't offer his much-maligned starter any guarantees about the status of his job for next season. Instead, he rewarded Boller with a game ball, a few encouraging words and another goal to set his sights upon. "Kyle stepped up; it was his time to do it," Billick said at yesterday's news conference. "Now, the challenge is to follow up." In Monday night's 48-3 rout of the Green Bay Packers, Boller provided the first signs of hope in a disappointing season, recording the highest quarterback rating (136.

The ratings are back from Monday's Orioles season opener, and let's just say that they aren't as rosy as the on-the-field result. The Orioles-Tampa Bay game on Channel 13 did a 13.2 Nielsen household rating and garnered a 29 share of the available audience, a goodly number to be sure, but the lowest Opening Day rating in five years, and the second-lowest in the past seven seasons.Monday's game was off 5 percent from last year's 13.9/35, and continued a general trend of sliding ratings for Opening Day telecasts over the last seven years, from a high of 18.7/40 in 1994 to Monday's number.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Orioles played their final road game in Florida yesterday, giving up their most runs of the spring in a 16-4 loss to the New York Mets. All that remains is today's home finale against the Mets and a trip to Atlanta to face the Braves before heading north for another Opening Day at Camden Yards. For most of the players, the end of spring training can't come soon enough. They agree that six weeks is more than enough time to prepare. The games already have become a grind.

WE INTERRUPT the latest hand-wringing over the latest five minutes of video that will plunge our nation into utter moral decay to ask a simple question: Whatever happened to watching football? Or baseball, or basketball, or the Olympics? Once upon a time, television networks televised big sports events to, you know, show the events. Desperate housewives always have been an integral part of the NFL experience; only now is Desperate Housewives officially part of the act. Yes, a complaint like that shows one's age. They don't use rabbit ears to pick up TV reception anymore, and you get more than the game when you turn on the game.
