MOMS CLUB of Ellicott City is holding a baby shower. That may not sound like a big deal for an organization made up of at-home mothers, but this baby shower is a little different. It's for the birth of two new MOMS Club chapters. With more than 130 members, the Ellicott City club has grown too large to be a single organization. The two new chapters will be MOMS Club of Ellicott City North/Woodstock and MOMS Club of Ellicott City South. Ellicott City North will encompass the area north of U.S. 40, while Ellicott City South will be for mothers who live east of New Cut Road and Routes 104 and 108. The existing chapter, which will be for members who live west of New Cut Road and Routes 104 and 108, but south of U.S. 40, will be Ellicott City Center.

KATHY TURNER remembers well that first winter as a stay-at-home mom.She had just moved to the area with a child and hadn't made new friends. Turner recalled feeling as if she were "losing [her] mind." The sense of isolation was overwhelming.Thinking other stay-at-home moms might be experiencing the same feelings, Turner started a Damascus/Mount Airy chapter of a national organization known as the MOMS Club.MOMS is an acronym for Moms Offering Moms Support. The club's goal is to provide a support network for stay-at-home moms, and a play group for young children.

BEING A NEW mother can be a solitary experience. When Jackie Londino and her husband moved to Maryland more than four years ago, she knew life would be different. The couple had left a lifetime of friends and family behind in Philadelphia. And since Londino had decided to leave her career as a surgical nurse to care for her infant son, she was even more isolated. But now the young mother has places to go, things to do, people to see -- and she owes that to the Glen Burnie MOMS Club. The Glen Burnie chapter of the nationwide nonprofit group was established more than five years ago. The group describes itself as "moms helping moms," but helps mothers and children by providing a network of friends and a wide range of activities.
