Orioles first baseman Mark Reynolds has been fined an undisclosed amount of money for his comments following his ejection Friday in Detroit , according to an industry source. But he will not be suspended, which the Orioles had feared after Reynolds ripped the umpiring crew's credibility when it overturned an out call at first base in the fifth inning. Reynolds was pulled off first by a difficult Manny Machado throw, but replays showed that Reynolds appeared to hang onto the base for a moment before lunging forward.

Major League Baseball has not made an official ruling regarding Mark Reynolds' umpire-bashing comments in Detroit as of early this afternoon. A decision should come today or tomorrow. It is expected that Reynolds will be fined but not suspended. Reynolds went off on the umpires following Friday's game after he was ejected for tossing his glove to the ground when an out call at first was overturned. To paraphrase, he said there should be more accountability from umpires, that they didn't take their mistakes seriously enough and that he felt, at times, they were purposely against the Orioles.

Showalter masterful Peter Schmuck Baltimore Sun Buck Showalter has done a masterful job of squeezing enough out of the Orioles roster to keep them viable in the American League wild-card race this long. Really, there's no other way to explain how a team that can't catch the ball and has only one starting pitcher who has remained in the rotation all season could still be in reasonable mathematical contention for the AL East title. Showalter has kept the O's focused through a summer of bad luck and key injuries.

Dodgers plugged holes Lance Pugmire Los Angeles Times While the Angels landing former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke filled a much-needed gap in their effort to win the AL West, the Dodgers stand as the trade-deadline winner by plugging so many holes. In addition to their acquisition last week of five-tool infielder Hanley Ramirez, Los Angeles added a proven big-league closer in Brandon League to help protect late leads and proven October pressure player Shane Victorino to further fuel the batting order.

As we reported last night, the salary of Joe Blanton is a sticking point in a deal to bring the husky right-hander to Baltimore. The Orioles just aren't paying $3 million or anything close to it for a two-month rental, No. 4-type starter So if not Blanton, whom do the Orioles get to put in their starting rotation? There aren't a lot of choices. Lefty Jason Vargas long has been a guy the Orioles have liked - they talked about dealing for him this winter. And Vargas is having a solid year, albeit with his home games at Safeco Field.

If you're an Orioles fan who's tired of seeing your team get slapped around in the big, bad American League East, David R. Craig has the solution. Craig, 63, is the Harford County executive. He's also a huge baseball fan. And when he's not consumed with budget matters, county council issues and constituent complaints, he plays mad scientist with the six major league divisions, tinkering with ways to make them more balanced and beef up rivalries. "We need to do something to make baseball come alive again," he says.

Steve Johnson pitched two innings in his major league debut Sunday against the Detroit Tigers and then was sent back to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Monday's starter, Chris Tillman, on the 25-man roster. Johnson, a St. Paul's graduate and the Orioles' first Maryland-born pitcher since John Bale in 2001, was activated Sunday when starting pitcher Jason Hammel was put on the disabled list. Johnson, the son of former Oriole pitcher and MASN broadcaster Dave Johnson, walked the first two batters he faced, but settled down after that.
