If it takes a tough man to make a tender chicken, who could possibly be up to this task: making a $2,500 jeweled evening bag out of an ostrich egg? The tough guy's chick, that's who. While describing some of Nancy Grasmick's fancy-schmancy knickknacks the other day, I mentioned that Frank Perdue's widow makes "faux Faberge eggs," one of which sits in the state school superintendent's living room. Fowl! cried Mitzi Perdue, all the way from Paris, where she was visiting friends. "No, no, no, my goodness, no!"

The 12-year-old boy watched his big sister and her friends being pulled from the tennis courts, arrested, packed into police cars and paddy wagons and hauled off to jail. "They didn't do anything wrong," David Freishtat cried. "They were just playing tennis," That's pretty much what H.L. Mencken, the renowned Baltimore editor and critic, said in the last column he published before a massive stroke ended his long writing career for the Sunpapers. On July 11, 1948, David's sister, Mitzi Swan, and her African-American tennis partner, Mary Coffee, walked onto the "whites only" courts at Druid Hill Park and stepped into Baltimore's civil rights history.

Not only is Mitzi Perdue tolerant of all the chicken jokes, she says that she and her husband, chicken magnate Frank Perdue, actually enjoy them. It's a good thing, too: These days, people toss egg jokes her way as well.Mrs. Perdue has been making a name for herself as an egg artist. She has become quite accomplished (an eggs-pert, she's heard more than once) at crafting intricate miniature worlds inside emu, rhea and ostrich eggs."Frank and I joke that we compete to see who can produce the most eggs in a week," Mrs. Perdue says.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Vinny Testaverde leans over the stroller and picks up the smiling baby. This is Vincent Jr., 7 months old and a small miracle. Dad lifts his child -- in those big, strong quarterback hands -- and knows there could have been two of them. But this little boy is perfect, and Testaverde holds Vincent Jr. over his head and smiles into the child's trusting eyes.Testaverde, the Ravens' Pro Bowl quarterback, seems an unlikely candidate to share details of his personal life. A private man who endured a career full of criticism before finally being accepted in Baltimore, he guards his family closely.

In most respects, Mitzi Speece is an average teen-ager. She hangs out with her friends, plays lacrosse, struggles with German class and occasionally argues with her parents.Last fall, however, her adolescent world took a dramatic turn. The petite 15-year-old was charged with arson at her Harford County school."It's been a very, very stressful thing," said her father, Fred A. Speece. He and his wife, Catherine, will never forget the day they got a phone call from Stephen R. Williams, assistant principal at Aberdeen High School: "There's been a fire at school and there is a question of Mitzi's involvement in it."
