Ending weeks of speculation, state Del. Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. said Monday he will not seek to replace City Councilman William H. Cole IV, who is leaving the council to run Baltimore's economic development corporation.  "As a former member of the City Council who represented the 11th district, I was asked by my former colleagues and community leaders to seek the appointment to the seat," Mitchell said in a statement. "After much thought, prayer, and deliberation with family and friends, I have decided not to seek a return to the City Council.

The garage apartment where a Baltimore man was slain was burned down the next night, prompting police to investigate whether the killer is covering his tracks. Sometime late Thursday or early Friday, the body of Duane Mitchell was found in the garage apartment he rented in the 4100 block of Fernhill Ave. in Northwest Baltimore. Baltimore police say he was killed by trauma inflicted by an unknown assailant. Homicide detectives and crime technicians inspected the crime scene Friday and left.

Lacrosse Jim Mitchell joining Rutgers as defensive coordinator Former St. Mary's captain Jim Mitchell is joining Rutgers as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator, the school announced. Mitchell was an assistant coach at Goucher in 2007 and 2008 and was goalie coach at Duke in 2011. He spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Bellarmine. His defense ranked eighth and 13th in the NCAA in goals-against average in each the past two seasons. In 2011, he was goalie coach at Duke.

Former NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell, who started a pair of games for the Ravens in 1999 and had a 12-year NFL career, will be featured on NBC's “The Biggest Loser,” a show in which people try to lose weight under the supervision of personal trainers. Mitchell currently weighs 366 pounds , but his NFL.com profile lists him at 240 pounds at the end of his playing career in 2001. He's currently listed as a bill collector, and according to the show's website, wants to get healthy for his family.

The president of Washington College announced Tuesday that he will step down this fall to take a new post in Virginia. Mitchell B. Reiss, who has led the college in Chestertown for four years, will become the new CEO and president of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia in October, according to a release from the college. "This is sooner than I would have chosen to leave Washington College," Reiss said in a statement. "But the college is in a strong position for the future, with great senior leadership across the board, and this new opportunity - to lead a renowned living history museum that is so crucial to our nation's sense of identity - is one I simply could not turn down.

On Friday, Georgia Tech lost forward Robert Carter to Maryland. Today, the Yellow Jackets got a Terp in exchange. "I'm a G tech yellow jacket now," former Maryland forward Charles Mitchell tweeted . "It's going to feel great playing right at home. " Mitchell, who in May announced that he was leaving the program to be closer to home, settled on the Yellow Jackets, who play not far from his Atlanta home. Georgia Tech had a need for frontcourt help after Carter's departure.

The merry-go-round that has been the Maryland men's basketball roster kept spinning Thursday, with forward Charles Mitchell joining four others who have jumped off since the end of last season and Richaud Pack, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from North Carolina A&T, hopping on. The Terps also announced that 7-foot Slovakian forward Michal Cekovsky officially signed his national letter of intent after committing to Maryland last month. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon made it clear that Mitchell's decision to transfer was different than the others.

The 2014 induction class for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame has been approved by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors. This year's eight-person class will be officially inducted in a ceremony on Saturday, October 25, at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley. The members of the 2014 induction class are: Stan Cockerton, Jay Jalbert, Erin Brown Millon, Steve Mitchell, Michele Uhlfelder, Peter G. Voelkel, Carole Wakefield (posthumous) and Marge Watson. Tickets for the induction ceremony will be available to the public for purchase beginning August 1 at  www.uslacrosse.org/HOF . Nearly 400 people are honored in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, which is located with the Lacrosse Museum at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Baltimore.

Del. Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. and his 11-year-old son, Jack, representing the third and fourth generations of a storied political family, are knocking on doors near Mount St. Joseph school in Southwest Baltimore. A few blocks away, Del. Keith E. Haynes, the deputy majority whip of the House of Delegates, has an entourage of a dozen people clad in Baltimore black and yellow as he waves to passing motorists in the Irvington business district. And Del. Melvin L. Stukes, who has 20 years of experience in elected office, is working the area's churches, week in and week out. It's the smallest, and one of the poorest, legislative districts in Baltimore, but 44A is perhaps the most fiercely contested.

More than a month after announcing that the contract of longtime men's basketball coach Fang Mitchell would not be renewed, Coppin State athletic director Derrick Ramsey said Monday he will introduce Stillman College coach Michael Grant as Mitchell's successor at a campus news conference Tuesday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. “I'm impressed with his work,” Ramsey said in an interview with The Baltimore Sun. “There are two things I'm looking for: the graduation rate, that's critical to me, and he's graduated over 80 percent of his kids.
