SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Orioles made a pair of significant roster cuts following Wednesday's 7-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, optioning South Korean right-hander Suk-min Yoon and catcher Johnny Monell to Triple-A Norfolk. The club also reassigned non-roster outfielder Xavier Paul to minor league camp. Yoon, 27, signed a three-year, $5.575 million deal with the Orioles last month, but he couldn't pitch in a Grapefruit League game until getting his work visa, a tedious process that sent him to Canada for four days and was just completed last week.

The Orioles have signed veteran Jack Cust to a minor league deal, an industry source confirmed Wednesday. The 35-year-old Cust will not receive an invitation to major league spring training, so he will report to the club's minor league camp at Twin Lakes Park. Cust had a tryout during the Orioles' minicamp in Sarasota, Fla., last month. At that time, Cust said he was looking for an opportunity to get back into the big leagues and was open to accepting an assignment in Triple-A.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Orioles are leaning toward sending Jay Gibbons to the minor league camp to play in the instructional league while he serves a 15-day suspension for violating Major League Baseball's rules against performance-enhancing drugs. A final decision is expected by tomorrow. Part of the delay is based on the confusion over whether Gibbons would be allowed to go on a rehabilitation assignment with one of the Orioles' affiliates. It's believed he's prohibited from doing so, but team officials are looking into it. Gibbons would prefer to work out with the Orioles in Baltimore and get his at-bats with a minor league team while they're on the road.

The Orioles made a move Thursday night that likely solved their Opening Day roster logjam - for a few days, anyway. Right-hander Chris Tillman was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left abdominal strain, retroactive to March 22, the earliest date a transaction can be backdated this spring. That means Tillman is eligible to come off the DL on April 6 and pitch the fifth game of the season against the Minnesota Twins. It also means the Orioles have an extra roster spot to play with for the first four days of the season, which likely will allow Rule 5 left-hander T.J. McFarland and infielder Ryan Flaherty - two players who have been on the roster bubble since camp opened - to make the club.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Right-hander Jair Jurrjens was hoping to show the Orioles once more what he can do on the mound before the club makes its final roster decisions. A line drive off the bat of Thomas Neal ended Jurrjens' last audition 21 pitches into Wednesday night's Grapefruit League game. The New York Yankees designated hitter smashed a comebacker right at Jurrjens, who instinctively turned to the side and was struck in the right ribs. He immediately left the game, two batters into the second inning.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Before Tuesday's game, the Orioles reassigned outfielder Lew Ford to minor league camp, cutting the spring roster to 37 players, which included nine non-roster invitees. After Monday's injury to designated hitter Wilson Betemit, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that “some of the dynamics changed” in forming the 25-man Opening Day roster. That means that when whittling down the mix of reserve players, players who can play first base as well as outfield have a better chance of making the team, because Betemit could have served as a backup first baseman.

This spring's competition for the fifth spot in the Orioles' starting rotation came a little bit closer to a conclusion Saturday when the team optioned left-hander Zach Britton to Triple-A Norfolk. The team also optioned infielders Jonathan Schoop and Yamaico Navarro to Triple-A and reassigned right-hander Daniel McCutchen to minor league camp. Those moves trim the Orioles' spring roster to 40 players. In five Grapefruit League outings this spring, the 25-year-old Britton had a 6.10 ERA, allowing 13 hits and seven runs in 10 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.

The Orioles made their first cuts of the spring Thursday, sending five players to minor league camp, including two of the organization's most promising young pitchers. The club sent out left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez and right-hander Mike Wright, who are widely considered the Orioles' top pitching prospects behind Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman. Also re-assigned to minor league camp were catcher Allan de San Miguel, who did not play in a Grapefruit League game for the Orioles because he was with the World Baseball Classic's Team Australia; catcher Luis Martinez, who didn't play in a game because of a left oblique strain; and left-hander Zach Braddock, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Former Orioles right-hander Alfredo Simon, who was placed on waivers on Friday, was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday afternoon. There was little doubt that someone would claim Simon, who throws in the upper 90s and could be either a starter or reliever. And the Reds, who lost closer Ryan Madson for the year to Tommy John surgery, could use added bullpen help.   Simon entered the spring as one of a dozen candidates competing for a starting rotation spot and started in the Orioles' first spring training game, but he missed nine days after tweaking his groin during a night start March 18 against the Yankees.  In his first appearance back last Wednesday, Simon allowed six runs in two relief innings.
