Harford County sheriff's deputies were called to investigate an attempted break-in Friday morning at a home near C. Milton Wright High School in Bel Air. An occupant of the home on Chester Way, in the Villages of Thomas Run, called 911 sometime around 10 a.m. after hearing glass breaking and observing subjects running away, sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Jim Eyler said. "Patrol officers responded and are handling it," Eyler said. "At this point, they aren't sure if anyone actually entered the home.

No. 3 North Harford played tension-free baseball Wednesday, which resulted in one of the Hawks' most dominating performances of the season. Senior Cody Brittain threw a one-hitter as North Harford rattled off 11 hits and defeated C. Milton Wright, 10-0, in five innings. "We were very relaxed," said Brittain, who improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.20. "We were as relaxed as we've ever been. We knew what we could do. I felt if I pitched as well as I could, my teammates would be behind me the whole time.

In the only girls lacrosse game Monday that had UCBAC division meaning, Joppatowne was an easy winner at Bo Manor, 15-4, in a Susquehanna Division match. The Mariners led at the half, 10-2. Emma McDougall led the Mariners (4-3/5-4) with five goals and three assists. Christina Miller added four goals and one assist and Emily Murphy had two goals. Julie Sands finished with a goal and three assists. Cara Chishom, April Kinyua and Samantha Soul each also scored a goal. Alexa Cover scored two of Bo Manor's four goals.

C. Milton Wright's girls lacrosse team had several leads against North Harford in Thursday night's key Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference game, but the No. 11 Mustangs couldn't put the Hawks away until the final three seconds of overtime. Abby Smucker rolled the crease and scored the game-winner in a 12-11 victory over the No. 14 Hawks as time ticked away in the six-minute overtime period. It was the fifth straight victory for the Mustangs over North Harford, and it boosted them into sole possession of first place in the UCBAC Chesapeake Division.

Few things are more exciting for a high school baseball player than to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the last inning. Wednesday, that opportunity came to Archbishop Curley's Andrew Shinnick, who couldn't wait to take his swings against hard-throwing C. Milton Wright reliever Steve Rappe in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and two strikes, the senior catcher unloaded a double that drove in both the tying and winning runs in a 5-4 victory. "I was pretty excited," Shinnick said.

The senior center fielder has been the early-season sparkplug for the No. 2 Mustangs, who are off to a 5-1 start that included three wins last week. A four-year starter, Canami is leading the team in nine offensive categories. In wins over North East, Perryville and then-No. 2 Archbishop Spalding, she batted .667 (8 for 12) with eight RBIs, six runs scored and two stolen bases.  Canami enjoyed perfect games at the plate in the wins over North East and Perryville - going a combined 7-for-7, driving in seven runs and scoring four more - before getting one hit, two RBIs and scoring the game-winning run in the upset win over Spalding.  Among other statistics, Canami leads the team this season in batting average (.542)

The senior shortstop led the two-time defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion and No. 3 Cavaliers (2-1) to two wins last week. In a 4-2 victory over Chesapeake-AA on Wednesday, Gunning went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. In Friday's 8-5 win over Century, she again went 2-for-3 with two doubles and drove in four runs. A two-time All-Metro selection and three-time IAAM A Conference All Star, Gunning has a career .310 batting average with 17 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 36 RBIs.

Girls basketball coaches in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference, which includes Harford County and Cecil County, announced their all-division teams on Wednesday. Both players of the year led their teams to the state tournament. Aberdeen's 6-3 All-Metro center Bri Jones averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds and 4.1 blocks in leading the No. 1 Eagles to their first state championship. Patterson Mill's 5-10 forward Morgan Golec averaged 18.6 points in leading the Huskies to the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

C. Milton Wright's girls basketball team scored the last 10 points of the third quarter and then held off every North Harford rally for a 51-46 regional playoff victory Friday that denied North Harford coach Lin James her 600th career win. The Hawks (14-9) won the teams' regular-season meeting, but Friday, the host Mustangs (18-6) used their perimeter game and pressure defense as well as timely shooting during the last five minutes to advance past the first round of the Class 3A North regional.

C. Milton Wright won the varsity division of the Harford County Winter Cheerleading Championships Tuesday night at Harford Tech High School. When the clapping, flipping and routines were done, the Mustangs had compiled a score of 132.85 to best runnerup Harford Tech's 127.45. Bel Air was third with 125.35. All three advance to regional competition scheduled for next week. Rounding out the varsity scores were Patterson Mill, 119.20; Aberdeen, 117.90; Fallston, 115.30; Havre de Grace, 90.30; North Harford, 74.60; Edgewood, 74.05; and Joppatowne, 68.30.
