As she organizes her second annual run to raise funds for breast cancer research, Darby Steadman is facing what she calls a delightful dilemma. She has no shortage of runners. The event in a Millersville park next Saturday is maxed out at about 250 registered participants and dozens of volunteers. The Driving Miss Darby Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Steadman and friends, may have to close registrations. "Isn't that a nice problem to have?" said the 40-year-old mother of two, who is battling breast cancer . Undeterred by the possibility of too many participants, she has expanded the event to "dozers.

A Millersville electrical contractor has been ordered by the U.S. Department of Labor to pay $45,745 in back wages to workers whom the company didn't pay overtime. Asplundh Tree Expert Co., which did business as Utility Lines Construction Services Inc., denied overtime to 41 workers performing manhole inspections for working more than 40 hours week, the Labor Department said. The company also did not keep proper records of employee work hours, the agency found. The employees were required to pick up and drive company vehicles prior to arriving at a job site and then return them after their shift ended.

Shawn J. Walker writes: I have three young kids (6, 3, and 1) so I don't think I can commit to the Park Quest challenge over a seven-day period, as you did. But I really want to take my two older boys and do exactly what Kendall Morton and his children were doing — paddling at Tuckahoe State Park — when you met up with them. Is that park far from Millersville? Can I rent a safe, stable kayak and go down a very calm stream anywhere close to Millersville? Outdoors Girl responds: It takes about an hour to get from Millersville to Tuckahoe State Park in Caroline County on the Eastern Shore.

In response to the article "Odor Complaints at Millersville landfill on the rise" (Jan. 31), I am writing to further inform readers about the ongoing efforts of the Department of Public Works in regards to our neighbors' concerns. Since January of 2009, during normal operating hours and non-operating hours, the Maryland Department of the Enviornment conducted 30 investigations relating to our neighbors concerns and only detected off-site odors on three occasions. They classified the odors as "very slight."

Frank Marion used to light candles to mask the odor. Marion, who owns a home about 300 feet from the Millersville landfill, has complained since 2008 about the smell of rotten eggs permeating his home on an almost-daily basis. Now, Marion and other neighbors say the odor has gotten progressively worse - stronger and more frequent - and is causing nausea, vomiting and headaches among some residents. "It has totally destroyed my life," Marion said. Last week, about a dozen of the residents met to discuss remedies: They are requesting that Anne Arundel County appoint a third party to monitor emissions from the landfill and to test the air and well water to determine if there are any contaminants.

Neighborhood:Village of Olde Mill Location: Millersville, Anne Arundel County Average sales price: $231,000 (January through June) Notable features: This neighborhood of 1970s houses goes against the grain of suburban look-alike streets with nothing but one color and style. Properties range from split foyers to townhouses with bump-out windows, some clad in wood, some in brick and some in siding. There's lots of attention paid to yards here. And because the neighborhood is just east of Veterans Highway and Route 97, it's a 15-mile drive to downtown Baltimore, 18 miles to Annapolis and 34 miles to Washington.
