Heading into Saturday's game against Poly at the 17th annual Basketball Academy, Aberdeen guard Jimmia McCluskey said the Eagles figured the two teams were pretty similar with their inside strength and their speed. The No. 1 Eagles, however, turned it up a couple notches on the No. 4 Engineers. Aberdeen used its swarming defense and, at times, a devastating press to run past Poly, 64-44, at Morgan State's Hill Field House. The Eagles (13-2) started to break away early in the second quarter with a press that forced two quick Engineers turnovers and sparked a 9-2 run for a 16-6 lead.

Milford Mill played sloppy basketball throughout the first three quarters against Patterson Mill on Friday. The Millers made too many turnovers and mistakes that let the Huskies stay close. Sophomore guard Dionna White helped change things in the fourth quarter. She scored seven of her 18 points in a crucial stretch during the final two quarters as No. 9 Milford Mill (13-2) took command en route to a 55-41 victory over No. 15 Patterson Mill (10-5) in the 17th annual Basketball Academy at Morgan State's Hill Field House.

After spending the previous five seasons as the school's junior varsity coach and varsity assistant under former coach Albert Holley, Silverman is excited about the prospects of maintaining the program's lofty standard on and off the basketball court in his first season in charge of the varsity squad. The No. 5 Millers, who have won four straight Baltimore County championships and two state titles in that span, are off to a 4-1 start and coming off an impressive 62-46 win over New Town on Wednesday. Silverman has maintained many of the same successful philosophies Holley incorporated into the program with some new twists thrown in. In addition to coaching, he's also the school's Physical Education and Health department chairperson.

The Milford Mill boys basketball team has set a lofty standard in Baltimore County, winning the past four county championships and claiming two state titles in that span. The foundation begins with playing smart and consistent basketball. The No. 5 Millers take care of the ball and find open teammates on offense, they rebound well at both ends and their defense has a knack for blocking shots. Together, those strengths leave opponents with little margin for error. On Wednesday night, New Town became the latest team to learn that.

"It was a good surprise," White said. "When they called my name, I looked at (Dunbar coach) Lawrence Smith and said, 'Who did they call?' and he said, 'You, Reg.' All I could say was, 'Wow.' "You really appreciate just getting the Coach of the Week award.

The season opener for Aberdeen's No. 1 girls basketball team came against a Milford Mill team that had hoped to avenge its loss in last season's Class 3A North regional championship. The Millers, however, will have to wait until March and the next regional playoffs to get that revenge. Once again, the Eagles' 6-foot-3 center, Brionna Jones, presented a challenge the Millers could not overcome as she scored 21 points and had 17 rebounds in leading Aberdeen to a 67-52 victory in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at the Beast of the East Showcase at St. Frances.

Chase Cormier graduated last spring from Milford Mill with a legacy of championships and individual honors, but not a single Division I scholarship. But despite his surprising lack of college of options, the 6-foot, 170-pound point guard said he never worried about eventually landing an offer. “I knew it was a matter of time,” Cormier said. “As soon as I made my announcement to go to prep school, I started getting phone calls from coaches.” Cormier's thoughts about recruiting were proven correct earlier this month when the Grambling State coaches scouted him at his Fishburne (Va.)
