The junior forward led the No. 4 Millers (24-2) to the Class 3A North regional championship last week, playing a pivotal role in the team's 64-50 semifinal win over Patterson on Tuesday before Friday's 70-65 victory against City in the title game. Costley scored 25 points against Patterson, including 13-for-13 from the free-throw line, and he also had seven rebounds. In Friday's win against City, he stepped up when it was needed most to pull away in the closing minute. With the game tied at 65, his layup with 37 seconds left gave the Millers the lead for good, and he added another basket in the closing seconds on a goaltending call.

Milford Mill junior forward Allen Costley had an emphatic dunk with 3 minutes, 13 seconds to play against visiting City that made a statement that the Class 3A North region belonged to the Millers. In the closing minutes of the game Friday night, he was more subtle in helping make sure. With the game tied and 37 seconds left, Costley was free under the basket as the Millers broke City's press. Sophomore guard Justin Jenifer found him with an outlet pass from half court for an easy lay in. Costley would go on to seal the win in the closing seconds when his shot was called good on goaltending as the Millers came away with a 70-65 win over the Knights.

City had brief spurts of quality offense and defense in the first half of Thursday's Class 3A North quarterfinal boys basketball game against Digital Harbor, but the Knights were unable to put everything together to shake the visiting Rams. The second half was different. With swift ball movement on offense and pressure on defense, the No. 8 Knights methodically broke down Digital Harbor for a 70-52 win to advance to the regional semifinals. City, which improved to 19-5 on the season, will return to its home court Tuesday to take on Aberdeen, which beat Hereford, 59-33, on Thursday.

With mostly young players, Hereford's girls basketball team finished its season 15-7 and its Monday-night finale certainly pointed to good things for the future. The Bulls stayed close before falling 57-49 to No. 4 and Baltimore County champion Milford Mill in the Class 3A North regional quarterfinals. Sometimes playing without a senior on the floor, they showed a vast improvement over their first meeting with the Millers led by a stellar performance from junior Nicole Viscuso. Viscuso, a 5-foot-11 junior forward-center who had 22 points in the regular-season 61-40 loss, scored a game-high 31 points and pulled down 19 rebounds Monday.
