The pitching of Denny Chapman and the hitting of Matt Deuchler enabled Centennial to defeat Glenelg yesterday and remain in first place in a torrid county race. The No. 11 Eagles bounced back from last Saturday's loss to Hammond by knocking off Glenelg, 9-4, as Chapman fanned 12 in a six-hitter and Deuchler ripped three hits and drove in three runs."This was Deuchler's best game," Centennial coach Ron Martin said. "He hit every ball hard. We had planned not to have Denny pitch the whole game, but we got worried because Glenelg has been coming from behind a lot, so we figured we had to try and make sure we won this game."

Rutgers reinstated men's lacrosse coach   Brian Brecht on Tuesday, almost a month after having suspended him with pay over allegations of verbal abuse. While the university investigation found that the former Loyola University assistant did use inappropriate language and exhibited unprofessional behavior on occasion, the instances were infrequent and not directed at individual players. Accordingly the university found no criminal or university policy violations. “I regret my behavior and am determined to set a better example in the future,” said Brecht, who missed the last two games of the season.

Rutgers announced the suspension of men's lacrosse head coach Brian Brecht, a former Loyola University assistant, on Friday pending a university police investigation of allegations of verbal abuse. No length was given for the suspension, which is with pay. Brecht's suspension comes a little more than two weeks after the highly publicized firing of men's basketball coach Mike Rice. Rice was let go April 3 after a video surfaced of him making homophobic slurs and throwing basketballs at his players during practice.

There is no magic formula for the Ravens to win, but running back Ray Rice has to touch the ball between 25 to 35 times a game as either a receiver or running back. In the Ravens 12-7 loss to Jacksonville Monday night, Rice had only eight carries for 28 yards and five receptions for 35 yards. He was the target on eight passes. Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs was surprised that Rice didn't have a lot of carries even though Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones Drew carried 30 times for 105 yards.

For a considerable stretch last night, it appeared as if Towson and Eastern Tech would play on even terms throughout an important Baltimore County Division I boys lacrosse game at CCBC-Essex. By about mid-game, however, Towson came to realize how important it is to have a good goalie, in this case Andy Posil, having a good night. "Andy was the guy who led us," said Generals coach Ben Berquist after his gang had streaked away from a 4-4 tie with six straight goals on the way to a 10-5 victory over the No. 14 Mavericks.

Eli Carter, a 6-foot-2 guard who received his release from Rutgers after the firing of controversial coach Mike Rice Jr., announced Friday on Twitter that he will choose between Maryland and Florida. Carter led the Scarlet Knights in scoring as both a freshman (13.8 points per game) and again as a sophomore (14.9) before suffering a season-ending broken leg in mid-February. Given the circumstances of Carter's transfer - coming after Rice was forced out amid charges of physically and verbally abusing his players during practice - he might be allowed to play immediately rather than having to sit out the one year normally required by the NCAA.
