A loss would drop the Greyhounds (7-6 in MAAC) to fifth. Either way, they'll meet Canisius in Saturday's opening round in Albany, N.Y. Sophomore G Mike Powell is second in the MAAC in scoring (19.8 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg), and third in steals (1.8 spg). Loyola is coming off Saturday's 61-57 loss to first-place Iona.

Mike Powell scored 33 to lead Loyola past St. Peter's College, 86-75, yesterday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Reitz Arena.Powell also had seven rebounds and three assists. Roderick Platt added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds (4-7, 2-1). Jason Rowe had 22 points.For the Peacocks (4-7, 0-3), Jamar Hunter and Ricky Bellinger each had 24 points. Jake Holmes scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds.Loyola led 34-32 at the half. A 12-2 run, with four points each from Powell and Rowe, gave the Greyhounds an 84-68 lead with 35 seconds remaining.

SEATTLE - Player-coach Gary Gait scored four goals to lead the Bayhawks to a season-opening 21-12 victory over the New Jersey Pride in a Major League Lacrosse game Saturday night at Qwest Field. It was the Bayhawks' ninth straight win over the Pride (1-1). The game was played in Seattle as a part of the league's Wild West Tour, introducing the pro game to potential expansion cities for the 2006 season. Attackman Mike Powell, making his MLL debut, scored twice and added three assists for the Bayhawks.

WASHINGTON -- Darryl Franklin scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to give American University a 65-58 victory over Loyola last night.Loyola (1-1) took a 50-48 lead on a layup by Roderick Platt with 4:35 remaining in regulation, but American (1-0) went on a 14-2 run to clinch the victory. Franklin scored 12 of the 14 points during the decisive run.Franklin hit a three-pointer with 4:12 remaining to send American ahead 51-50 and then tallied another three-pointer 40 seconds later to extend the lead to four.

Loyola sophomore guard Mike Powell was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first team yesterday. Powell, a transfer from Virginia, was second in the conference in scoring with 20 points a game.Loyola forward Nsilo Abraham was voted MAAC Rookie of the Year. He averaged 8.2 points and had a team-best .484 field-goal percentage.The North Atlantic Conference placed Towson State senior forward Ralph Blalock on its second team. He averaged 17.2 points and 4.3 rebounds. Drexel senior center Malik Rose was Player of the Year and Drexel's Mike DeRocckis was Rookie of the Year.

Marcus Faison scored 20 points, including 13 in the second half yesterday, as Siena held off Loyola, 103-102, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game in Albany, N.Y.Loyola (11-13, 9-7) trailed by as many as eight in the second half before Jason Rowe made one of two free throws with 1: 29 left to tie the game at 99. But Jim Cantamessa put Siena (14-9, 9-6) up for good with a layup with 1: 10 remaining.Rowe's game-high 30 points led five Greyhounds in double figures. Jamal Hunter had 19 points, Ryan Blosser 18, Roderick Platt 16 and Mike Powell 13.Powell's three-pointer at the first-half buzzer gave Loyola a 49-48 lead.
