The last time Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco faced a Mike Pettine-led defense, he had arguably the worst game of his career . Pettine, a former Ravens assistant, was Buffalo's defensive coordinator last year, when his Bills defense had five interceptions in a 23-20 victory. Pettine, now the Browns head coach, said it wouldn't make sense to follow that day's game plan Sunday. “It's not applicable, just because it's a different [offensive] coordinator,” he said. “The system is completely different.

When the Ravens travel to play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, there will be several familiar faces on the opposing sideline. That includes Browns first-year head coach Mike Pettine, a former Ravens outside linebackers coach under John Harbaugh who got his start with the organization breaking down games in the video department for former Ravens coach Brian Billick. A former standout high school football coach in Pennsylvania, Pettine became a defensive coordinator with the New York Jets when he left the Ravens' staff to work under Rex Ryan and then with the Buffalo Bills prior to landing the Browns' job after last season.

One year after John Harbaugh coaxed Greg Mattison out of college football, he turned over the Ravens' defense to his longtime friend. Mattison, 59, who spent the 2008 season coaching the Ravens' inside linebackers, will succeed Rex Ryan as defensive coordinator, the team announced yesterday. The decision to stay in-house with the next coordinator was Harbaugh's in a concession to continuity and chemistry. Mattison was selected after a round of four interviews with staff members Vic Fangio, Clarence Brooks and Chuck Pagano.

It's another tantalizing Ravens-Jets matchup, another chance to dissect the Ravens' decision to go with John Harbaugh over Rex Ryan as head coach in 2008. Please, let's stop this incessant second guess of Steve Bisciotti. It's silly, it's tiresome and it's pointless. Bisciotti made the right call for his organization. Harbaugh was exactly what the Ravens needed at the time: an energetic, forceful, demanding coach who swept the country club atmosphere out of the team's locker room.

When last seen in the AFC championship game, the Ravens had a lot going for them. They had a defense that body-slammed ball carriers at every turn, a quarterback who didn't shrink at crunch time and a running game that commanded respect. Since that loss in Pittsburgh, the losses have mounted. Free agency cost them linebacker Bart Scott, safety Jim Leonhard and center Jason Brown. Cornerback Chris McAlister left in a funk and Samari Rolle wants out. Matt Stover is suddenly old news. Worst of all, they watched Rex Ryan leave to take the New York Jets' coaching job, and he took his top lieutenant, Mike Pettine, with him. Ozzie Newsome can replace the defections on the field.
