The opportunities to be a college head coach had been there before for longtime Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski. “Finding a school that matches who I am as a person and the vision I have for the program is really important,” Wojciechowski said a couple of years ago. “But I want to be a head coach and run my own program and do the things that happened to me at Duke. I want to do that for other kids”. Wojciechowski hopes to have found that match at Marquette. The 37-year-old Wojciechowski, who grew up in Severna Park and played at Cardinal Gibbons, was introduced as the head coach of the Golden Eagles Tuesday at a press conference in Milwaukee.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti knows that Ray Lewis and Ed Reed will be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the moment they become eligible. With former Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams, who was nominated last week for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame , Bicsciotti feels that a little politicking for his longtime friend couldn't hurt. Realizing that the 68-year-old Williams is as resolute about not lobbying for votes as he was unwilling to deal with certain AAU coaches when it came to recruiting their players, Bisciotti is confident that he and others -- including some of Williams' former competitors -- will to take up the fight to get Williams honored later this year.

Coach K is a lock Mike Anthony Hartford Courant If Mike Krzyzewski stepped aside tomorrow it might be difficult, though not impossible, to argue that he is the second-greatest, or even greatest, coach of all time. But at 63, and with no indications of tiring, he's not going away. We know what the future holds for Coach K and Duke: 25 victories a season. When Krzyzewski is done, he'll sit atop the NCAA Division I all-time wins list with well over 900. As the U.S. national team coach, he led the "Redeem Team" to gold at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Duke fans get enjoyment from chanting that Maryland is "not our rival" and, based on some of Mike Krzyzewski's comments about the Terps' move to the Big Ten, it doesn't seem like the Blue Devils intend on getting too nostalgic about the upcoming end of the teams' feisty series. But when Duke and Maryland play their final regular season game as ACC foes on Feb. 15, the Blue Devils will be unveiling a special new look. That game will be Duke's first wearing new Nike Hyper Elite Dominance uniforms that were revealed Thursday . Other teams that will be sporting the old-meets-new retro look include  Michigan State, Ohio State, Kentucky, Syracuse, Oregon and North Carolina.

You have to love Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. He always thinks his program is better than yours and that it's above reproach. His holier-than-thou attitude about Maryland leaving for the Big Ten is getting a little tiresome. He's Saint K. When asked Thursday on the ESPN 980 AM Sports Fix show whether the Blue Devils would play the Terps again, he said no, unless it's part of the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. "Well, that would be the only way it would be done, because we won't schedule Maryland,” Saint K said, according to the Washington Post's Sports Bog . "And there's nothing to that, just that it doesn't work out for us to do that.

GENE WOJCIECHOWSKI/Los Angeles Times * Until last night, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski always had been April's fool. His Blue Devils teams would skip happily through March Madness only to disappear when the calendar struck April. But on a magical night -- April 1, to be exact -- Duke would be denied no longer. The Blue Devils, more preoccupied with beating Kansas, 72-65, than revising history, finally presented Krzyzewski the national championship he wanted. At last, Krzyzewski was able to scale the steps of a wooden ladder and snip the remaining strings from a Hoosier Dome basketball rim. This time, after going 0-for-April in each of the past three seasons, he left the court with a thin smile, an NCAA title and maybe a little vindication, too.FRED MANN/Wichita (Kan.

Baltimore Sun reporters Don Markus and Jeff Barker and producer-editor Jonas Shaffer weigh in on three topics from the past week in Maryland sports. How much influence did Mike Krzyzewski have in Maryland not getting a return game from Duke this season? Don Markus:  As much as Terp fans love to blame Coach K for everything - the 10-point lead that disappeared at Cole Field House in January 2001 and the 22-point lead that evaporated at the Metrodome in Minneapolis later that season in the NCAA semifinals as well as for a handful of of other games when the Blue Devils got their share of calls -  this was one controversy that was easy to Krzyzewski to avoid.

From Maryland's perspective, the basketball rivalry with Duke was born in the late 1990s when Gary Williams brought the Terps from the bottom of the ACC to the top. During the 2000-01 season - when the teams met four times, including in the ACC tournament and at the Final Four - it was considered the most heated college rivalry in the country. From Duke's perspective, the rivalry between the Blue Devils and Maryland has been downplayed - if not completely dismissed. According to their fans, who still chant "Not our rivals...

Steve Wojciechowski still looks like the pugnacious point guard who came out of Cardinal Gibbons nearly two decades ago and proved those wrong who said he wouldn't make an impact at Duke. He's spent the past 13 years as an assistant and now associate head coach wunder the legendary Mike Krzyzewski and the past six helping Krzyzewski's staff for the U.S. Olympic team. In describing his role with the national team, Wojciechowski said he, fellow Duke associate coach Chris Collins and Syracuse associate head coach Mike Hopkins help prepare scouting reports on upcoming opponents as well as get on the court during practice to run drills for the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

As an NBA assistant coach since retiring after a Hall of Fame career, Patrick Ewing might have a better seat than many of his contemporaries to compare this year's U.S. Olympic men's basketball team to the fabled Dream Team of 20 years ago. Ewing was one of 11 Hall of Famers on that team and played in the shadow of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and even Charles Barkley in Barcelona. But Ewing doesn't't think the current team led by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant could compete for one simple reason.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is certainly not a favorite among Maryland fans -- my older son, now 23, used to call him "The Devil" after the 2001 NCAA semifinal in Minneapolis -- but there's always been a grudging respect paid to a man who has now won more games than anyone in Division I men's college basketball. So it was interesting to hear what Coach K had to say after Duke's 73-60 win over the Terps at Comcast Center on Wednesday night. Krzyzewski will always take a positive spin after his team wins -- how the opposing team impressed him, or how hard it played.

For the first time in more than two decades, the Atlantic Coast Conference's annual men's basketball media day was held without Gary Williams there to represent the University of Maryland. Williams retired in May, and at Wednesday's media day, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski talked about the void left at Maryland and in the ACC. “The Duke-Maryland games were huge games for our conference,” Krzyzewski said. “And we lost an incredible personality and somebody that helped not just brand the Maryland program, but helped brand ACC basketball.” Williams led Maryland, his alma mater, to a national championship, two Final Fours and a 461-252 record.
