BASEBALL is so much about fathers and sons. (And, nowadays, mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, mothers and daughters.) Parents see the image of "Field of Dreams" this time of year: playing catch through darkening evenings on soggy spring lawns.Baseball hooks adults into the triumphs and disasters of childhood, the epiphanies of our youth: moments frozen in memory, when life was perfect or perfectly terrible, when we were wondrously good or sadly lacking. And now when we watch our children we relive all that -- and sometimes wish that the exquisite balance of baseball did not always require one player's failure for another's success.

NEW YORK -- Yankee Stadium was a virtual lake Saturday evening, water pouring into the dugouts. There was flooding throughout the entire area, and the forecast was for more rain, all day yesterday. New York manager Joe Torre admitted he thought there was no chance Game 1 would be played last night. But the hard rain stopped overnight, and sun even peeked through the clouds for more than an hour yesterday morning. At about 11 a.m., two police helicopters flew into Yankee Stadium and hovered over the field, drying out the drenched outfield.

Kirk Gibson will accept a role with the Pittsburgh Pirates that he didn't want with the Kansas City Royals -- backup.Gibson, 34, staged a one-day walkout from Kansas City camp last week after learning he wouldn't be a regular player. He then asked to be traded and was dealt to the Pirates on Tuesday for left-handed pitcher Neal Heaton."My reaction with Kansas City came basically because they told me I was not going to be given the chance to prove I could still help the club on a regular basis," Gibson said.
