The youth movement is on at Washington College. The Shoremen, the ninth-ranked team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association preseason poll, will open the season on Saturday at home against Goucher and plan to play a number of freshmen. Rookie Owen Evans will join senior Jim Cusick (Calvert Hall) and junior Sam Birnbaum on the starting attack. Freshman Matt Allen will be part of a four-man rotation with junior Luke Birnbaum and sophomores David McBrien (Calvert Hall)

A 2-year-old boy was injured early yesterday evening when he fell from a second-floor window of his home in the Murray Hills section of Laurel, said a spokesman for the Howard County Fire Department.Capt. Mike Baker, the spokesman, said the incident occurred at 5: 43 p.m. in the 8300 block of Mary Lee Lane and that the child was flown by state police MedEvac helicopter to Childrens Hospital in Washington, where he was treated for bruises and lacerations.It was not immediately known whether the child was admitted to the hospital or discharged, Baker said.

Enrico's father, bassman Dominic Vigliotti, died of prostate cancer last year, just a few weeks before his son was born.Some of the best blues players in the area will participate in the "Blues Revue," which will be presented by Graffiti's and Music Monthly. The basketball games involving Meade and North County high schools, postponed Dec. 6, will be played next month, said North County Athletic Director Mike Baker.The games have been moved to Monday, Jan. 6, with the junior varsity girls playing at 3:30 at North County, followed by the varsity girls at 5 and the varsity boys at 7 p.m. The junior varsity boys game will be 3:30 at Meade.The threat of a shooting forced county school officials to postpone the games. School and police sources said an anonymous person called 911 on Dec. 4 and warned of a possible retaliatory shooting at thevarsity boys game at North County.

North County athletic director Mike Baker announced yesterday morning that the Linthicum school is seeking a baseball coach for its inaugural season after the sudden resignation of Dennie DeWitt.DeWitt,39, said he surrendered the position nearly two weeks ago because of personal health problems. He would not comment further on his condition.A physical education teacher at Overlook and Belle Grove elementary schools, DeWitt said he has not been at work for a month, and probably would not be back by March 1, the first day of baseball tryouts.

North County athletic director Mike Baker announced the hiring of Brad Wilson yesterday as boys basketball coach.Wilson replaces Dick Hart, 53, who is undergoing treatment for a cancerous brain tumor and cannot coach the Knights' first season.Wilson, 30, served as an assistant the past eight years to Meade head basketball coach Butch Young while also serving as head coach of the junior varsity squad. He is currently the head defensive coordinator of the North County football team.Baker said Wilson was chosen from among three applicants because of his "extensive experience working in one of the two best programs in the county."

A trash truck driver -- who Howard County police said accidentally ran over and killed a co-worker Monday -- has been charged with driving while intoxicated.Thomas Parks, 51, of the 2600 block of E. Ashland Ave. in Baltimore, was being held on $25,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center yesterday.Traffic investigators charged Mr. Parks Monday night and then gave him an alcohol breath test, said Sgt. Steven Keller, a police spokesman.Sergeant Keller refused to disclose the result of Mr. Parks' breath test, saying that it could prejudice the investigation into the death of Darryl Andre Harrison, 38, of the 1800 block of N. lTC Register St. in Baltimore.

Joe Mallia has no intention of stepping outside Baltimore, but the Spirit had to go all the way to Morocco to find his replacement.After Mallia decided to remain at Loyola College as a full-time assistant women's soccer coach and at least temporarily suspend his playing career, the Spirit signed Khalil Azmi, 33, of Morocco to a one-year contract.Azmi was the starting goalie for Morocco in the 1994 World Cup and has appeared in 73 international games. He played for the Charleston (S.C.) Battery last summer and the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in 1996.
