Selection Sunday was a little more subdued, but no less satisfying, for the Maryland and Morgan State men's basketball teams going to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. A year ago, Maryland boosted its chances of going to the NCAA tournament by winning back-to-back games in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, but still was nervous about the bid until seeing its name pop up on the television screen. This year, the mind-set was markedly different as the Terps watched together at Comcast Center.

South Carolina State's men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit to beat UMES, 59-53, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal in Winston-Salem, N.C. Jason Flagler had 20 points and the Bulldogs (17-13) outscored the Hawks (11-21) by 13 in the second half. Hillary Haley had 13 points for UMES. Women Bethune-Cookman 63, Morgan State 52: In her last college game, Corin Adams scored 23 of her game-high 25 points in the second half but the Bears (17-13)

Kevin White (23 points) scored the last 13 points of the game as the UMES men (11-20) beat 11th seed Coppin State (8-22), 64-58, in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Hawks, the No. 6 seed, will face South Carolina State (16-13) in tonight's quarterfinals at 6. MORE MEAC: Kevin Thompson (Walbrook) scored 20 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out six assists to lead Morgan State past North Carolina A&T, 84-75, in the quarterfinals.

For Corin Adams, the math was simple. Play at talent-laden Syracuse and get limited minutes off the bench. Or play at depleted Morgan State and get all the minutes the petite 5-foot-5 guard could crave. "Instead of playing 12 minutes, I wanted to play 38 minutes," Adams said, reducing her 2006 decision to come to Baltimore and play for the Lady Bears to its lowest common denominator. It was the best signing decision Don Beasley has gotten in five years as Morgan's coach. Adams was a slick ballhandler, quickly became a scorer and essentially has run the show for four straight seasons.

Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez was named ACC Player of the Week for the third time this season and the seventh time in his career. Vasquez averaged 24.7 points, 6.3 assists and 5.7 rebounds as the Terps moved into second place with wins over Virginia, North Carolina State and Georgia Tech. More men's honors: The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference named UMES sophomore Tyler Hines Defensive Player of the Week after he had 13 rebounds, blocked a shot and made a steal in a win Saturday against Coppin State.

South Carolina State punctured Morgan State's aura of invincibility at Hill Field House on Monday night and dealt the Bears their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss in nearly a year, 71-68. Led by Jason Flagler's 24 points, the Bulldogs hit 57.1 percent of their shots and held a 12-point lead with 6:39 to play. But Morgan had one final run and narrowly missed pulling off a dramatic comeback when a pair of 3-point shots missed in the final seconds. The Bears battled foul trouble -- they lost leading scorer Reggie Holmes and DeWayne Jackson in the final minute -- but still got to within 70-68 on a runner by Joe Davis with 21 seconds left.

Troy Smith made two free throws with 37 seconds left and Morgan State overcame Bethune-Cookman, 48-47, to remain undefeated in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The host Bears (18-7, 10-0) trailed 42-38 with 4:34 left before scoring five straight. Smith's 3-point play put Morgan State up 43-42 with 2:56 remaining. The Wildcats (15-9, 6-4) regained the lead, 47-46, on a 3-pointer by Jarrell Thomas with 1:02 left. After Smith's free throws put the Bears up, Bethune-Cookman had two chances for the win. C.J. Reed missed a jumper with six seconds left and Albert Abrahams, who came down with the offensive rebound, missed a layup with four seconds left, giving the Bears their eighth straight win. Men's college basketball Thompson leads Morgan St. past Norfolk St. in OT, 100-94 Kevin Thompson (Walbrook) scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help Morgan State defeat host Norfolk State, 100-94, in overtime Sunday and remain unbeaten in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Bears (15-7 overall, 6-0 MEAC) trailed 90-89 with 2:35 left in the extra period before scoring eight straight points. Dewayne Jackson's dunk gave Morgan State a 97-90 lead with 24 seconds left.
