By the time you read this, I will be on my way to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to return home after 40 days in South Florida. It was a tough assignment, but somebody had to do it. No doubt, there will be a band playing upon my arrival back at BWI and the sun will be shining brightly on the Mid-Atlantic region, but I'm bringing a jacket just in case. Believe it or not, it will be good to get home.

Three Maryland cities are leading the mid-Atlantic region in employment by emerging companies, according to a survey.Rockville ranked No. 1 in the mid-Atlantic region with 11,581 jobs in emerging high-tech firms with fewer than 1,000 employees, according to the survey by CorpTech of Woburn, Mass., which tracks growth among technology companies. Baltimore was No. 2 with 8,419 jobs and Bethesda was third with 7,713.Emerging companies are an important gauge because most of the new employment opportunities are with smaller companies, said Deborah Nielsen, editor of CorpTech's Technology Industry Growth Forecaster.

Ryland names Gancsos president for mid-AtlanticThe Ryland Group Inc. has promoted Thomas J. Gancsos, 43, to president of the Mid-Atlantic Region for Ryland Homes, replacing Timothy R. Doyle, who resigned. Gancsos previously was region vice president and acting president of the Virginia division.As president, Gancsos will oversee Ryland's homebuilding operations in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia."Tom has been a part of Ryland for more than 15 years, during which time he has been instrumental in the Mid-Atlantic Region's growth and success," said R. Chad Dreier, Ryland Group chairman.

Russ Taylor, Loyola SPORT TENNIS BOYS STATS -- The senior captain, who plays either No. 1 or No. 2 singles for the Dons, won his first four matches of the season. Taylor, who has guided the Dons to top-three finishes in the past three Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title races, is a returning league All-Star. Taylor is ranked No. 68 among 18-and-under players in the Mid-Atlantic region. SIDELINES -- Taylor is president of the senior class, active in his church, and instructs young children in tennis at the Greenspring Valley Hunt and Elkridge clubs.

This boxed wine, made in California for a Baltimore-based startup company and distributed in the mid-Atlantic region, fills a useful niche. In quality terms, it's a cut above most boxed red wines, though the price is correspondingly higher. And the 1.5-liter box — equivalent to two standard bottles at $11 each — fills a useful niche that that's been left vacant by most competitors. The company also makes a merlot and a chardonnay, each of which is equally worthy of a recommendation.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, which sets monetary policy and oversees financial institutions in the mid-Atlantic region, said Monday it had named three Marylanders to a new community investment council created to advise the institution on emerging local issues and trends. The Maryland representatives are Mike Franklin, owner of Franklin's Brewery in Hyattsville; Mark Sissman, president of Healthy Neighborhoods in Baltimore; and Clarence Snuggs, deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
