Evergreene Cos., a Chantilly, Va., developer, is debuting in the Baltimore metro market with its first-ever project, Towson Mews, located in East Towson. Josh Mastrangelo, Evergreene's president, coastal division, said the residential developer did a market survey of greater Baltimore before deciding on East Towson. "It was the right opportunity. A lot of exciting things are happening in Towson," he said. The project calls for 35 townhouses that will front onto East Pennsylvania, Jefferson and Virginia avenues and with a through-street from Jefferson to Virginia.

The Baltimore Skipjacks yesterday returned center Harry Mews to the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League.Mews, who did not score in two games with the Skipjacks, was to rejoin the Admirals in Johnstown, Pa., for their game with the Chiefs.Baltimore, in first place in the Southern Division of the American Hockey League and a 5-2 winner over the Utica Devils on Saturday night, will play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hersheypark Arena against the Hershey Bears.

The Baltimore Skipjacks yesterday assigned two former first-round draft choices, goalie Ollie Kolzig and center Harry Mews, to the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League yesterday.Kolzig, the No. 1 choice of the Washington Capitals in the 198 entry draft, played junior hockey last year with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League, but had not seen any action with the Skipjacks this season.Mews, who played for Northeastern University last year, was Washington's No. 1 choice in the 1988 supplemental draft.

Skipjacks center Harry Mews considers himself very lucky.Mews, 24, has bounced back from an injury -- a compound fracture of the jaw -- that could have ended his career. He is now practicing with the Skipjacks and taking part in all the contact drills. Skipjacks coach Rob Laird said he thinks Mews may be ready to play in games in a week.When Mews does return, he will be playing for the AHL's New Haven Nighthawks, an independent team with no NHL affiliation. He is on loan from the Washington Capitals along with goalie Byron Dafoe and recently signed Russian right wing Andrei Kovalev.

Oxford Mews, a 192-unit affordable-housing project off Bywater Road in Annapolis, may have fallen victim to the savings and loan crisis, and its demise could cost the city government $156,000.Robert Gaines, an Annapolis developer, had been negotiating to buy the 18 acres from Second National Federal Savings Bank, but federal regulators seized the thrift and its assets in December 1992, before the sale could be completed.Now, Resolution Trust Corp., which manages the thrift's properties, wants to sell the land.

The Washington Capitals assigned four Skipjacks players to the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League in order to get them more ice time, team officials said.Centers Vic Gervais and Harry Mews, defenseman Jiri Vykoukal and goalie Byron Dafoe will play in Friday's opener in Hampton, Va., against Columbus.Dafoe, who has started three games for the Jacks with a 3.69 goals-against average, will return to the Jacks when Don Beaupre moves onto the Caps roster, which will probably be next Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

For some of Carroll County's aging population, retirement at a proposed $20 million community could mean spa days, dances and movies at their doorstep. The Westminster Common Council approved the annexation of the 162-unit Westminster Mews on Monday night after a public hearing in which there was only one dissenting voice. The latest senior-living project created by the Shelter Group, a Baltimore-based developer and property-management firm, the Mews is expected to encompass about 150,000 square feet upon completion in fall next year.

HELEN LORD celebrated her 105th birthday last month, and she was ready to answer the question that has been asked almost every day since she turned 100: What is your secret to such longevity? "I don't smoke, I don't drink, and I don't run around with the boys," Lord said, joking. That has been her stock answer for many years, but most people say that optimism, faith, strength and the love of her family have kept her moving all these years. Many of Lord's friends and family members helped her celebrate her birthday April 25 at a luncheon at Westminster's Carroll Lutheran Village, where she lives.
