In the eyes of at least two families, the closure of Towson Catholic High School is a broken promise. The mothers of 16-year-old students Elisa Marie Windsor and Hannah Messina have filed a lawsuit and a request for a temporary restraining order that, if granted, would prevent the school's closing for the coming academic year and the dismissal of any of its faculty and staff. In the suit, filed Tuesday in Baltimore County Circuit Court, the girls' mothers - Lois Windsor, president of the school's parents association, and Judy Messina, the group's vice president - claim that closing the school would deprive the students of the education they had been promised.

Hannah Messina and Cristina Mastellone always assumed they would walk across the same stage to pick up their high school diplomas. After all, the close friends have been classmates since preschool. But six weeks from the start of their senior year, the sudden closing of Towson Catholic High School has ripped their certain plan to bits. "I am not supposed to be crying now," said Mastellone. "I am supposed to be crying at my graduation next year." "I should be looking at colleges, not other high schools," said Messina, wearing her white school polo shirt and blue uniform skirt.

Magellan Health Services Inc. of Columbia announced yesterday that President Daniel S. Messina is being named chief executive officer in addition to his current title. Messina succeeds Henry T. Harbin, who will stay on as the company's board chairman. The transition takes effect Monday. The promotion is one of a number of changes the company has made in the last year as it has gotten out of the hospital business and shifted its focus to behavioral managed care, Harbin said. Magellan is hired by HMOs, employers and governments to provide mental health care.

COLLEGE PARK -- Last fall, Brad Messina spent weekdays at a junior college and Saturdays in front of the television at his family's home in Bogota, N.J., watching endless college football games and passing time as a fan.It was a roundabout trail to Messina's redshirt sophomoreseason and a starting position on Maryland's offensive line. He foundered academically as a true freshman and spent the fall 1996 semester at Bergen Community College, but re-enrolled at Maryland last spring, when everyone started from scratch for first-year coach Ron Vanderlinden.
