The Sun can propagate all the feel-good rhetoric it wants, but it won't change the truth ("Doing better than 'fine,'" June 12). The private sector is not fine, has not been fine for the past 3 1/2 years, and if President Barack Obama is re-elected, it will remain not fine. The Sun's editorial board should be ashamed of itself for the blatant manner in which it tried to make it appear as if Mr. Obama is doing a "fine" job. Your subscribers are not stupid (as you are) and know what a pathetic mess this country is in. The Sun should be honest enough and non-partisan enough to admit it. Gail Householder, Marriottsville

A veteran defense attorney running an independent campaign for Baltimore state's attorney argued in Circuit Court Friday that city election workers "messed up" when they ruled he did not have enough signatures to appear on the November ballot.  "Just because they say it's so, don't make it so," said Edward Smith Jr., the attorney for candidate Russell A. Neverdon Sr. "Each and every [signature] they looked at, they messed up. " Judge Martin P. Welch said he will postpone ruling on the case until after he hears more evidence next Friday.  The city's Board of Elections said earlier this monrth that Neverdon fell more than 1,000 signatures short of the 4,160 needed to challenge Democrat Marilyn J. Mosby on the general election ballot.

When the political advertisements from the Ehrlich campaign say "O'Malley is moving us backwards," do they mean back to the Ehrlich administration's mess? Do they mean back to the financial deficit created by former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. that Gov. Martin O'Malley had to clean up? Mr. Ehrlich makes empty promises, while Mr. O'Malley has secured huge funding for our schools and for transportation. Sydney Roby, Baltimore

As a veteran, I wonder why President Barack Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid aren't putting an end to this nonsense in Washington. As a lame duck president, Mr. Obama's power will only decrease as time goes by. And the only reason we are dealing with these crises all the time is that Mr. Boehner doesn't want to lose his job as speaker. They should get over it. As for Senator Reed, he barely got reelected by the people from the great state of Nevada.

I am a senior citizen. My husband is a senior citizen. Ninety-five percent of our friends are senior citizens. We go out to eat, we see a movie occasionally, we bowl duck pins or ten pins. We travel by plane or on a tour bus and go on cruises. The average taxpayer has to sit back and watch the government waste money. The senior citizens who have any money saved have practiced common sense through the years - and we've paid into Social Security with every paycheck we ever received.

Regarding the recent editorial on the debt ceiling ("Another cliff ahead?" Jan. 4), why not put a majority of the blame on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the do-nothing Democratic-led U.S. Senate? He has avoided his Constitutional (not to mention fiduciary) responsibility by not passing a budget for the past three years. If Senator Reid had done this and then had the normal conferences with the House with a resulting law to go to President Barack Obama each year, we probably would not be in the dysfunctional mess we are in. All the media wants to blame the Republicans in the House.

President Barack Obama first gives the "come on" signal to these Central American countries. So they take him up on it and overwhelm our already overworked border patrol. Now Mr. Obama is asking for $3.7 billion to clean up "his" mess ( "America's refugee crisis," July 9). There is something wrong with this picture. When he says that these children and the rest of the illegal invaders will be sent back, he knows darn well that it will never happen - like "you can keep your doctor.

Now that Hillary Clinton is unemployed, here is a synopsis of world situations she was engaged in and responsible for during her tenure as Secretary of State. China: Officials she upset would not even meet with her the last three years. North Korea: Our attempts to talk with them never commenced and they are now threatening to shoot long-range nuclear missiles at us. Egypt: An ally forever is now run by the Muslim Brotherhood to whom we are now selling sophisticated weaponry.

All too often, I hear that President Barack Obama inherited this economic mess that we're in right now. Let's get the story straight for a change. He helped create this mess. In 2005, President Bush tried to push legislation through Congress to place regulations on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Mr. Bush knew that these organizations' policies involving the lending of mortgage money to those that couldn't afford it were going to cripple the economy if not regulated. It was the efforts of Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd and Democratic Rep. Barney Frank, accompanied by Sen. Barack Obama, that were successful in blocking these regulations by threatening to filibuster.

Fact: Captured Hamas fighters confirm that their maze of secret tunnels into Israel was to be the entry point for a series of coordinated terror attacks during the Jewish High Holidays - all in order to massacre Israeli citizens at lightly guarded border settlements. Opinion: Americans should keep this scenario in mind as Secretary of State John Kerry readily adopts Hamas talking points and positions in his attempts to secure a "humanitarian" cease-fire. Hamas views such cessations of hostilities as mere opportunities to re-load in their ongoing campaign to reign terror (and ultimately destroy)

As usual, the Obama administration is blaming President George W. Bush for its supposed inability to return the 40,000-plus unaccompanied minors from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. According to administration officials, a 2008 law signed by then President Bush has made it nearly impossible to deport these minors. Funny, how in just about every other "impossible" situation President Barack Obama proclaims all he needs is his pen and his phone to remedy any problems facing his imperialistic presidency.

Twice in recent days you have let the stupid opinion that we hear every year at this time be aired in your publication, first by Stuart Janney and then again by Peter Schmuck ( "A year after Triple Crown spotlight, Stuart Janney III reflects on horse racing in Maryland," May 11). That is the notion that we ought to change the Triple Crown to make it easier for a horse to win it. Any tinkering would be spitting in the eyes of the great horses of history that have, without any whining or belly aching, achieved one of he toughest feats in sports.

News about Ukraine is disturbing, but it's time the European Union takes control of the matter and the United States stays in the background ( "Moscow's Achilles heel," April 17). I don't like what's happening in the region, but there's no need for President Barack Obama to "wave the bloody shirt or rattle sabers. " We've seen what happens when this country leads the charge in far-off conflicts. Regarding your suggestion the U.S. and the European Union nations go after assets of wealthy Russian citizens, this should never be on the table.

By John E. McIntyre and The Baltimore Sun | March 24, 2014
Each week The Sun's John McIntyre presents a relatively obscure but evocative word with which you may not be familiar, another brick to add to the wall of your vocabulary. This week's word:  IMBROGLIO When you discover what a nice mess you have gotten yourself into, you have a word at hand to label the situation.  Imbroglio (pronounced im-BROL-yo) can be, variously, a mess of things, such as the heap of clutter that has accumulated in the garage; a complicated situation, such as the plot of a soap opera; an embarrassing misunderstanding; or a confused and complicated dispute, such as the recurring kerfuffles over the exposure of spurious rules of English usage.  English pocketed the word from the Italian around 1750.  Example:  From a 2005 Washington Post article: " The Judith Miller-Valerie Plame-Scooter Libby imbroglio is being reduced to a simple narrative about the origins of the Iraq war. "

After reading Dan Rodricks diatribe in today's Sun ( "If John Boehner is a moderate, we have a problem," July 28) I was tempted to opine that his column was what one would expect a loud-mouthed liberal to spew out. But then I decided to simply challenge him to prove - prove - even some of the allegations he had made in his column: the tea party freshmen class created the mess over the nation's debt ceiling, the tea party's agenda is...

Dan Rodricks | December 16, 2013
A careful reader pointed out a flaw in my column of Thursday. I noted that, before leaving for his nine-day trip to Brazil, Gov. Martin O'Malley had said problems with Maryland's mind-numbingly bad health insurance exchange would be fixed by mid-December. I said mid-December was Dec. 15 at noon. In fact, the halfway point of the month was Dec. 16 at noon. My math was off by a full 24 hours, so I may have been a little unfair to the governor. Turns out, it didn't matter. O'Malley announced on Saturday, Dec. 14, two days ahead of his deadline, that the state's online exchange was "now functional for most citizens.
