With its soft lighting, pale green walls and rooms filled with high-tech equipment, the new $13.3 million Robert and Phyllis Scott Performing Arts Center and Business Training Center at Carroll Community College more closely resembles corporate offices than academia. That look is exactly what planners envisioned for the multilevel brick building, which they hope will help fill the gaps identified in a recent study that revealed deficiencies in Carroll County's labor force. "We wanted a professional atmosphere, a place where the business community can come for training across all levels," said Karen L. Merkle, vice president for continuing education and work-force training at the two-year college.

A Towson man and his wife are in danger of losing their business after First Mariner Bank held the couple responsible for more than $80,000 in checks it had cleared, but were later found to be fraudulent. The checks were written to their business, Appel & Cook IT Systems Inc., by a businessman from Africa, who made two purchases of computer equipment. It was later found that the man, who identified himself as Mr. James, had written counterfeit checks off an account in Texas. First Mariner, which cleared the checks, has frozen the couple's business account and issued a claim to have the money repaid.

Catholic girls soccer coach Jerry Dieter has just one problem with senior Allison Merkle -- she can't be in two places at once. For two years, Merkle dominated the midfield for a powerhouse Cubs team that was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation. She helped the Cubs win the Catholic League A Division championship and earn the final No. 1 ranking last fall, but much has changed.Few starters remain on a young team that has been lacking in confidence and offensive punch. Before Tuesday's 3-1 win over Institute of Notre Dame, the Cubs were winless and had scored only once.
