On Wednesday, May 21, 2003, JIMMY D. MENEFEE, age 76; husband of Muriel E. Soden; son of the late Herman J. and Eva M. (Shinaberry) Menefee; father of Sharon Menefee, Nancy and husband Victor Impallaria, Melanie Menefee, Jimmy Dale Menefee, Jr., Gary Michael Menefee, Stanley J. Menefee, William Brian Menefee, Curtis Own Menefee, Herman Taylor Menefee; and brother of Starling Menefee. He is also survived by ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Friends will be received by the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut Street, Philippi from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. Friday the service hour.

A 20-year-old Marine from Westminster was killed in a noncombat vehicle accident in Iraq on Friday - just one month after arriving in the country, the Department of Defense announced yesterday. Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, who died in Al Anbar Province, was assigned to Combat Service Support Group-1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Twentynine Palms, Calif. He was a 2003 graduate of Westminster High School. At his mother's townhouse in Westminster last night, the family was still reeling from the news of his death, which was delivered to them Friday.

On July 21, 2005, after a lengthy battle with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease), SELITHA EVANS MEACHAM MENEFEE entered into eternal rest. She was 61 years old. She worked in the Baltimore City Public School System for 33 years as a foreign language teacher, and retired in 1996. A native of Aiken, SC, she had resided in Maryland since 1963, after receiving her baccalaureate degree in French from Hampton Institute, magna cum laude. It was at Hampton that she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and one of the first Black Americans to participate in the Experiment in International Living in Europe.

Lawrence Ashton Menefee Jr., a retired Baltimore architect who designed multi-unit residential projects as well as churches and private homes, died of vascular dementia Saturday at Brightwood Center in Lutherville. The Hampden resident was 71. Mr. Menefee was born and raised in Baltimore, the son of an architect. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Paul's School and earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Virginia in 1958. He began his career working for a Wilkes-Barre, Pa., architect and returned to Baltimore in 1961, when he joined the architectural firm of Smith & Veale.

Hundreds of swimmers were hauled from the water by escort boats near the Bay Bridge yesterday when a strong current forced the Coast Guard to halt the eighth annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Swim.In addition, State Police arrested the organizer of the event, Fletcher Hanks, 72, of Oxford, who they charged with attempting to run two legs of a "triathlon" event along state roads without a permit. Hanks could not be reached for comment.A total of 720 swimmers were pulled from the water by dozens of Coast Guard and private boats as a strong, two-knot current swept contestants from the 4.4-mile course, running from Sandy Point State Park near Annapolis to Hemingway's Restaurant on the other side of the bridge.
