Zinfandel makes several different styles of red wine in California, roughly reflecting the county of origin. One of the most distinctive - and best - is that of Mendocino. This version from the reliable Edmeades winery is an excellent expression of the style - with high-toned, spicy, wild berry flavors, a pleasing acidity and well-concealed alcohol, even at 15.5 percent. It's an excellent value in a red wine ready for early consumption. Serve with: pasta, grilled red meat

From: Mendocino County, Calif. Price: $20 Serve with: Beefy stews, pasta with tomato It's a bit hard-edged when it's first opened, but this full-bodied red wine quickly opens up to display vibrant flavors of blackberries, wild berries, plums, herbs and chocolate and black pepper. There's a port-like quality to this blockbuster, but it's a fully dry wine. It's pretty gripping. -- Michael Dresser

2005 Husch "Renegade" Sauvignon Blanc, Mendocino County ($18) This full-bodied, dry white wine is a standout among its peers. It coats the palate with intense flavors of peach, pears, apples, spices, mint and figs. It's an excellent alternative to "another boring chardonnay." Serve with grilled salmon.

From: Mendocino County, Calif. Price: $14 Serve with: Salmon, ham, crabs Bonterra is one of California's largest and most reliable producers of organic wines. More important, from my point of view, is the fact that they're very good wines that won't make you feel like you're consuming them for your health. This Chardonnay would be an excellent value, organic or not. It's made in a breezy, fresh style, with a light application of oak (only 16 percent was put in new barrels)

2003 Handley Pinot Noir, Mendocino County ($16) For a mid-priced California pinot noir, this wine does a pretty decent impression of a $50 Burgundy. It offers very pure pinot fruit with a lot of flavor intensity. There's good acidity in the finish and no sign of harshness, heat or green vegetables. This wine is silky-smooth and ready to drink with a wide range of foods from salmon to steak. Serve with --roast poultry, tuna steak

1997 Zingaro Zinfandel, Mendocino County ($14). Hold on to your hats -- this is one exceptional zinfandel at a very attractive price. It's a wonderful example of a Mendocino-style zin -- lots of spiciness, intense black raspberry fruit and maybe even a touch of mesquite. If you're used to the blockbuster Sonoma style of zinfandel, you'll find this wine surprisingly elegant. It's also complex, intensely flavorful and a wonderful companion to serve with a gourmet-style pizza or a thick steak.

1996 Parducci Petite Sirah, Mendocino County ($9).This medium-bodied red wine isn't as burly as many petite sirahs, but it delivers more than its share of value. There are hearty flavors of black pepper, blackberry, smoked meat and even a touch of blueberry. Unlike some wines from this underrated grape, it is fully ready to drink at a young age. It has good acidity and should meld well with grilled steak or lamb.

2006 Artezin Petite Sirah From: Mendocino County, Calif. Price: $25 Serve with: Beef, lamb, pasta Petite sirah is often flavorful and structured but seldom smooth. This petite sirah is all of the above. It's an intensely flavorful red wine that is a joy to drink now, but has the potential to develop added complexity over the next decade. Blackberry, chocolate and herbs are just a few of the flavors to be found in this supple gem.

MENDOCINO COAST, Calif. -- Crab is both indulgence and staple in many ports of the world, with each region declaring its variety the best. Marylanders have their blue crabs. On the West Coast, the large Dungeness crab caught in cold ocean waters rewards Pacific Ocean chauvinists with sweet, briny flesh. "Men are risking their lives to produce this incredible delicacy that is only available a few months of the year," says Mel McKinney, innkeeper at the Little River Inn on the Mendocino coast.
