Whoosh! On the other end of the little feet zooming toward you, there is a giggling little face."Do it again, Daddy!"Before the daddy can reply, the child is climbing the ladder again.Since the week before Memorial Day, that's been the scene at Taneytown Memorial Park. With awe and excitement in their eyes, small children from surrounding areas have brought their parents to the park so the adults can watch the children slide to their hearts' content. The red tube and open slides are just one attraction of the new playground that was installed in May. There are monkey bars, poles to slide down like a fireman, dangling parallel rings to climb across, steering wheels to drive, and a tic-tac-toe game.

A pleasant Memorial Day weekend, dear readers! Memorial Day observances will be conducted May 27 at 9 a.m. at Angel Hill Cemetery and then proceed to Tydings Memorial Park by 11 a.m. Contact the American Legion Post 47, 410-939-0234. Memorial Day honors deceased veterans of all wars, though it was begun as a tribute to Civil War dead. Falling as it does with our country involved in a major military conflict in Afghanistan, let this be a patriotic inspiration to us all. As we honor our fallen heroes, some very recent, may we remember and cherish the freedoms and liberties for which they fought to defend.

IN the play "A Dance of the Forest," written by Wole Soyinka of Sierra Leone, the living meet in the forest with their ancestors. The living see in their ancestors only themselves: the brave, the gentle, the flamboyant, the helpers, the hurters. That is what happens each Memorial Day at Arbutus Memorial Park on Sulphur Spring Road in Arbutus, when family and friends of the dead gather with each other and their ancestors.Surrounded by the tiny black community once known as Cowtown, "Arbutus," as it is called now, opened in 1936 to "coloreds" who wanted the finest in perpetual care for their loved ones but who couldn't be interred in "white" cemeteries.

When my cat Atticus died, I was a wreck. We got a call from a neighbor who found his little tabby body in the street. He'd been hit by a car. My husband (at the time) scooped him up and brought him home to the garage and left the cat there, as he had to fly off on a business trip. Long story short: A day later, I had an Episcopal priest in my backyard, giving my cat a send-off as we buried him (probably illegally). It made me feel a little better, standing with my friends, giving Atticus, a great feline, his due. At some point, I stopped continuously crying and shaking.

"So, are you the one?" The young woman behind the counter at Swallow Falls State Park raised her eyebrows a little and looked at me. "The one?" It sounded a tad Obama-esque, but I nodded. She sighed in relief and handed me a small, red plastic tub filled with camping essentials (bug spray, sunscreen, pretzels, Band-Aids) and topped off with a stuffed black bear — a welcoming gift to start Park Quest 24/7. My goal was to visit 24 state parks, from west to east, during seven consecutive days and complete the quizzes, puzzles and scavenger hunts cooked up by the Maryland Park Service, compressing a summer-long event being done by 750 families into one week.

Once, the intersection of Cator Avenue and Old York Road in the Pen Lucy neighborhood was so troubled that people wouldn't sit outside on their porches or walk through on their way to church. Young men were being shot and killed on the street. And the corner lot was grassy and overgrown. But 22 years ago, Emma Worrell began tending to the broken lot, trimming the grass, inviting neighbors to plant flowers and, eventually, dedicating the rectangle of green to members of the community who had been lost to violence.
