Mc KINLEY "MACK" THOMS, age 92, passed away silently on Monday May 1, 2006 in Omaha, Nebraska after a long illness. He was married to the former Henrietta Austin, who left us 28 years ago. They will be joined together once more. Mc Kinley spent 36 years at Western Electric in Baltimore before his retirement. Mckinley is the father of Donald Thoms, On-air talent for MPT pledge drives, and Discovery Channel Executive, and the grandfather of Tracie Thoms, film and television actress. She was one of the leads in the film RENT, and can be seen in the television series COLD CASE.

There are some teachers whose genius is clear nearly from the moment they step into a classroom. McKinley Broome, it seems, is one of those teachers. In his first year of teaching, he won the Rookie Teacher of the Year Award in Baltimore County and Wednesday, just six years into his career, the fourth-grade math and reading teacher was presented the Milken Educator Award, an award compared to the Oscars for teaching. The $25,000 cash award was a closely guarded secret at Woodholme Elementary School known only to the principal.

McKinley "Mack" Thoms, a retired machinist and caterer, died of complications from diabetes Monday at St. Joseph Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Omaha, Neb., where he moved three years ago. The longtime West Baltimore resident was 92. Born in Windfall, N.C., he moved to Baltimore in 1932 and attended city public schools. He retired in 1978 after working for 36 years with Western Electric Works at Point Breeze. He began there as a janitor and left as a wire machinist. Mr. Thoms was also a caterer and often worked through the old Duke & Lou's delicatessen at the Park Lane Shopping Center.

Kevin Francis McKinley, a certified financial planner and former Towson resident, died of cancer Friday at a hospital in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was 54. Mr. McKinley was born in Baltimore and raised in Towson. He was a 1970 graduate of Towson High School and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Alabama in 1974. Mr. McKinley later earned a master's degree in business from Loyola College and law and master's degrees from the University of Baltimore. He began his business career with BGE as an engineer and later joined the company's financial department.

Ethel M. Deaver, a former educator whose handwritten memoir chronicled her life, died in her sleep Sunday at the Presbyterian Home of Maryland in Towson. She was 109. Ethel Marie Wilde was born during the first term of President William McKinley, on Sept. 17, 1897, in Baltimore. "I checked, and there was no way we could verify that there was anyone older, but I would say at 109, she certainly has to be one of the oldest Marylanders," Anne G. Sunderland, publlc affairs director of the Maryland Department of Aging, said yesterday.
